Golden Eagle golfers hopes of a MAC championship and an undefeated league season was crushed by the team that was their regular season tie, the only blemish on an 8-0-1 regular season league schedule.
The Eagles going into the championship, had the identical record as the team from Central Mountain, all wins and one in the tie column. This was to be Central Mountains day, with medalist honors going to their number one spot with Parker Everett shooting a sizzling 73, followed close by his teammate, posting 75.
The Golden Eagle golfers had very little to offer on this day of golf, falling by 11 shots to Central Mountain, 233 to Tyrone’s effort of 244,
The Eagles did manage a second place finish by finishing six shots ahead of Central (250).
“We did not come through today,” said coach Ferguson. “We did not play up to our ability as a team today. We would have had to be flawless to beat those guys today, they were solid. Our guys had a real nice season this year, but it would have been nice to come out on top, but that is the way any game is played. Central Mountain deserved to win, they really played well.”
The Eagles were led by first-year player Jimmy Ferguson, firing a real nice 75,
“Jimmy played well despite 37 putts,” saif Coach Ferguson. “I watched him hit a lot of close shots, his putting was very suspect, but his ball striking was sweet, hitting 16 of 18 greens, Jimmy had a great season as a freshman, I look forward to watching him as we rebuild over the next year. Matt Brooks started off with some mistakes, but was able to finish with a couple of nice birdies on some hard holes to finish out his day at 82, I liked the way Matt hung in there to play his final 10 holes at 2 over par, Ryan Ruscio and Jason Tuskovich had tough days today posting 87 and 89 respectively.”
Tyrone will compete in the sectional qualifier at Sinking Valley on Monday at 1 p.m . Play becomes more individual from here on out. There will be a field of roughly 80 players, and the top 20 and ties will advance to Scotch Valley on October 8-9.
Last season, Ryan Ruscio was Tyrone\’s only player to advance to the district competition.
