Two local teams are entered in the District 6 basketball playoffs.
The Bellwood-Antis boys team drew the third seed in Double-A and a bye through the first round action which accompanies that seed.
The Tyrone boys team (8-13 for first-year head coach George Gripp), earned the 10th seed and will play a Double-A first round game against Philipsburg-Osceola, the seventh seed, on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Huntingdon High School. The game, the second of two at Huntingdon that night, will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles and the P-O Mounties split a pair of two-point regular season meetings.
Steve Catich knocked down 30 points for the second game in a row in the first meeting, a 61-59 Eagles win which took place at Philipsburg, on Jan. 9. In the return game, on Feb. 2, at Tyrone on Senior Night, Catich scored 15 points to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures, but the Mounties sank a last-second trey to pull out a 55-53 victory. Nate Dane scored 14 points for the Eagles, and Johnny Franco added 12.
The winner of the Tyrone/Philipsburg-Osceola contest will travel to number two seed Blairsville for the quarterfinal round.
Bellwood-Antis (19-5), coached by Tim Keech, will play the winner of the Penns Valley/West Branch first round game in the quarterfinals, on Friday at a place and time to be determined. The Blue Devils (16-2 in Juniata Valley League action) have dropped a pair of close games to Juniata Valley League champ Penns Valley (19-4,18-0 in the JVL) 43-40 at Bellwood, and 51-45 last Saturday at Penns Valley. Bellwood-Antis has knocked of West Branch twice, 52-39 on the road and 59-50 at Bellwood.
Undefeated Westmont-Hilltop is the top seed in the District 6-AA Basketball Tournament, Blairsville is second, Bellwood-Antis third, Bishop McCort fourth, Central is fifth and Penns Valley is sixth.
