Student skiers and snowboarders from schools throughout the area, including Tyrone, will be joining forces again this winter to help raise funds for the animals at the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society in this season’s “Ski/Board for the Animals” campaign.
The young participants represent Ski/Board clubs at their schools who compete to raise the most funds for prizes and bragging rights. The campaign operates as a “Ski/Board-a-thon” and involves soliciting sponsors to donate on behalf of individual students. Those students who raise at least $20 will receive special, limited edition CPHS “Ski for the Animals” T-shirts and “goody bags” filled with items donated by local merchants such as food coupons, ski-related items and more.
In addition, the club raising the most funds overall will take possession of a large “traveling” trophy and have “bragging rights” for the year. A major prize new to the event this year is a $200 gift certificate to a local electronics retailer which will be awarded to the student who raises the second highest amount of donations from among all who participate.
The first place fundraiser (overall) will receive a season lift ticket courtesy of Blue Knob Resort. The second top fundraiser will be presented with a $200 gift certificate for the retail store. Each school’s club top fundraiser will earn a one-day lift ticket.
Last year, the students raised almost $5,000 to help homeless animals. This year, the funding is needed more than ever, according to shelter officials.
In addition to the student participation, CPHS holds a special public event (“Ski for the Animals”) slated for the weekend of February 24 – 25 at Blue Knob Ski Resort. Details about it will be distributed in early February.

Also, the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society is hoping to sell the last of its supply of \”Picture Perfect Pet\” calendars by holding a special sale.
Beginning immediately, the calendars have been reduced from the regular price of $7 each to $5.
The full color, glossy print calendars feature over 70 local pets who competed for the honor of being pictured as a month, on a special \”honorable mention\” page or on the front/back cover.
Pet owners this year raised over $23,000 in the contest, setting a new all-time record for an individual fundraising event to benefit the shelter\’s homeless animals. Additional funds will be raised through the current \”sell-off\” of the calendars.
The calendars are carried by some local veterinary offices and the CPHS shelter and thrift shop in addition to some area retailers. Among those who still have some to sell are: Chris\’ Hallmark, Brew Zoo (both in the Pleasant Valley Shopping Center), Thompson Pharmacy (Chestnut Ave.), V.I.P. Pets & Aquarium, Tyrone Veterinary Associates, Daily Herald, New Look Uniform, Ambience Photography (Ebensburg), Moments Photography, Ray Kauffman Photography, Quality Awards (Altoona), A-1 Auto Glass, Beaks, Paws & Claws (Hollidaysburg) and Veterinary Hospital of Altoona.
The shelter accepts cash, check, money orders or credit cards as do most of the merchants selling the calendars.
Also, CPHS has an on-going wish list for those individuals who would like to donate an item to the shelter, which can include: kitty litter, puppy and kitten food, leashes and collars, toys and treats for the animals, bleach and laundry detergent, medium-sized gloves for cleaning, old blankets and towels, copy paper, postage stamps, hand sanitizer and paper towels.
