The Tyrone wrestling team opened their 2006-07 season on a sour note traveling to Indian Valley to absorb a 47-22 defeat at the hands of the Warriors.
With the match beginning at the 125-pound weight class, Chad Frankhouser set the pace for the rest of the match, taking down Eagle senior T. J. Albright after several brief skirmishes and Albright, a defending Class-AA district champ, couldn’t work his way out from underneath with Frankhouser recording the fall at the 1:15 mark.
Tyler Bedelyon pinned Anthony Romano at 130, Adam Will decked Josh Miller at 140, and Ty Boyer won by a 16-1 technical fall over J. P. VanAllman at 135, and Mike Armstrong decisioned Jeremy Barlett at 145, to jump the Indian Valley wrestlers out to a quick 26-0 lead.
The Eagles would need the rest of the dual meet to score 27 points.
Jake Smerekar broke up the Indian Valley string at 152, with a reversal to begin the second period and a three-point nearfall in the third stanza for a 5-0 win over Randy Raugh. Justin Schopp pinned William Nass from the top in the middle period at 160, in 2:43 and John Markel notched a takedown in overtime to post his first varsity win at 171, to bring the Eagles back to within 26-12.
Skyler Romig broke up the Eagle mini-rally with a 4-1 triumph over Donnie Conrad at 189, however to ice the victory for Indian Valley.
Trevor Latchford picked up a 22-9 major decision at 215, for his first varsity win, using 10 takedowns and a reversal to outpoint Nate Smitherman.
At 103, freshman A. J. Schopp became the third Golden Eagle to post his first varsity win. Schopp jumped on Nate Copenhaver for a takedown and three different sets of backpoints before getting the fall at 1:24 of the opening period.
“Our younger kids had some first match jitters, but for the most part did pretty well out there tonight,” explained Tyrone wrestling coach Blair Packer.
Tyrone forfeited to Indian valley at 285 and 112, and Nic Bedelyon pinned Tyler Poorman for the Warriors at 119, to close out the match.
“We didn’t wrestle like we were battle ready tonight,” said Packer. “Indian Valley had wrestled a dual meet already, plus wrestled in the Top Hat Tournament, so they each had probably wrestled five or six matches. That can make a lot of difference. We can’t afford to give up pins and have two wrestlers out of our lineup because of academic problems and expect to beat a quality team like Indian Valley.”
Tyrone (0-1) will get back into action this weekend when they travel to Central Mountain High School on Friday and Saturday to wrestle in the King of the Mountain Tournament, where annually some of the best teams and individuals in the state in both Double-A and Triple-A, will be wrestling.
In junior varsity action, Brady Williams won a 19-4 tech fall in 3:00 and Shayne Tate won a 7-1 decision, while Vince Campbell, Cody Reese, Cody Weaver and Matt Moore all lost decisions.

Indian Valley 62 Tyrone 36
The Tyrone junior high also dropped their first dual met action to Indian Valley, falling behind 29-0, before rallying to get back to within 44-30, before dropping the match 62-36.
Tyler Osterhout (90), Chase Weaver (100), Bob Sellers (115) and Andrew Spickler (145) all won by fall for the Little Eagles. Ronnie Garbinski (95) won by forfeit, Isaac Walk (130) won a 5-2 decision and Jeremy Miller (138) shutout his opponent for a 5-0 regular decision.
