Bishop Guilfoyle scored with 3:21 to play to edge the Tyrone junior high school football team 14-8, on Thursday at the Little Marauders Pleasant Valley field.
Eugene Ehredt dashed 40 yards to score to break up an 8-8 deadlock for Bishop Guilfoyle and then the BG defense protected the lead to provide the victory.
The Marauders took the early lead when Beard went 50 yards for a second-quarter touchdown and Ehredt added the two-point conversion run for an 8-0 half-time advantage.
Tyrone tied the game in the third quarter, when Eagles quarterback Shane Walker capped a drive with a one-yard keeper. Kyler Johnson, who had a monster game with 170 yards rushing on 16 carries on the muddy, rain-soaked field, rushed for the two-point PAT and a tie ballgame.
Following the Ehredt score, the Golden Eagles had one more shot, working the ball inside the BG-10, with a first and goal at the nine-yard line. Four tries netted nothing however and the Bishop Guilfoyle squad (1-6) walked away with their first win of the season after six straight losses.
“This game could have gone either way,” said Tyrone junior high coach Dan Plummer. “We have been up and down all season. We got the ball to the BG-9 with four plays to score and couldn’t out it in. This was pretty much a running game with the field a mess and rain falling like crazy. We had the opportunity late but we weren’t able to make the plays, either on offense or defense, when we had the chance.”
The Little Eagles (3-5), who have been up and down all year will finish their 2006 season with a home game at Tyrone Veterans Memorial Field on Thursday against Penns Valley. Kick-off for the night grade game will be 5:30 p.m., with the seventh/eighth grade game starting at 4 p.m.
