Herbert C. F. Werner, 79, of 1559 Valley View Blvd., Altoona, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 6:34 p.m. at Altoona Regional Health System-Altoona Hospital Campus.
He was born January 24, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois a son of Herman and Elizabeth (Steiner) Werner. He was remarried to Virgie Werner on June 2, 2008.
Surviving are his wife, a daughter Brenda Werner of Tyrone, 3 sons, Terry of Altoona, Kenneth of Tyrone, Curtis of Dillsburg, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Mark and Wayne and a sister Anne Zimmerman.
Mr. Werner retired in 1992 as mailroom department manager for the Altoona Mirror. He began his career as Sports Editor of the Tyrone Daily Herald serving from 1947-1958. He then served as Sports Editor for the Altoona Mirror from 1958- 1980 and later as Executive Sports Editor for three years. He continued writing periodic golfing and bowling columns for the Altoona Mirror until the present. Recently he was employed at Thompson Pharmacy as a delivery driver.
He was a 33 year veteran of the Pennsylvania National Guard retiring in 1989 as Brigadier General. He had served as an Adjutant General for the Pennsylvania National Guard in Philadelphia.
He was a member of the Tyrone Elks, Sinking Valley Country Club, Golf Writers Association of America and the Tyrone Golden Eagle Monogram Club. He was a 1947 graduate of Amundson High School, Chicago.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 14, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 14th St. and Pennsylvania Ave., Tyrone with Pastor Barry Neal officiating. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Feller Memorial Home, 817 W. 15th St., Tyrone on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
