The Youth Outreach Center is the home of the area’s well-known Discount Food Program, which recently announced its August menu.
Individuals who are not registered participants will need to register on August 12 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. when placing an order. Individuals must have a photo ID with them to register.
Participants will receive the following August menu for only $25:
Meats
• 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breast
• 1 lb. deli sliced turkey breast
• 1 lb. boneless center cut pork chops
• 1 lb. meatballs
• 1 lb. ground beef
• 1 lb. breaded chicken nuggets
• 1 lb. ground turkey
Produce
• 3 lbs. fresh potatoes
• 1.5 lbs. fresh onions
• 3 packages fresh vegetables
• 2 packages fresh fruit
Other
• 1 package of eggs
• 2 shelf stable items
There are no limits on how many boxes individuals purchase, no income guidelines or residential boundaries. The Discount Food Program reserves the right to substitute any food items due to availability, cost, quality and freshness.
The following specials are available only for this month at the price listed. The specials are available only with the purchase of at least one box of food.
• Special No. 1: Combo Box: four 6 oz. USDA choice fillet of beef sirloin steaks and four 6 oz. USDA choice fillet of beef steaks – $16.50;
• Special No. 2: Breakfast Deal: 6 frozen omelets, 10 hash browns, 8 blueberry waffles, 2 boxes (7.25 oz. each) French Toast sticks, 1 can orange juice, 6 pecan twirls, and 8 oz. beef sausage – $10 and
• Special No. 3: Farm Fresh Package, full of fresh produce straight from the farms in Pennsylvania – $13.50.
Individuals have two options to place their orders:
First, individuals may pay in person by exact cash, money order or food stamps (EBT Card requires a photo ID and the person on the EBT Card is the only one allowed to make purchases). If an individual is a new participant, they need to bring a photo ID to register on payment day.
Payments for this month will be accepted on Saturday, August 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Food concessions will also be open that day for takeout.
Second, individuals may pay by mail by money orders only. Only registered participants can place orders by mail. All money orders must be received by Saturday, August 12 at 3 p.m. Make the money order payable to “Youth Outreach Center”.
With a money order, an individual must include a note with their full name, address, phone number and exact order and a self-addressed stamped envelope for Youth Outreach to mail the receipt to. Money orders not received by Saturday, August 12 at 3 p.m., money orders without all the necessary information included, or money orders from people who are not registered will be returned and no order will be placed. Money orders will not be processed until payment day.
Mail money orders to: Youth Outreach Center, Attn: Discount Food Program, 1311 12th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601.
Food distribution day is scheduled for Saturday, August 26 at Youth Outreach Center, 1311 12th Avenue, downtown Altoona. Individuals must bring one large box or laundry basket per order. Please follow the time listed on the receipt so distribution day flows smoothly with as few delays as possible.
Also, volunteers are needed to help unload the truck at 8 a.m. and to distribute food until 12:30 p.m.
Food will be distributed according to the first letter of the participant’s last name as follows: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A-I; 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. J-Q and 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. R-Z.
At 12:30 p.m. doors close, and the remaining food is donated to charity.
In case of a transportation delay, information will be posted on the automated system at 942-9400 ext. 1 for the Discount Food Program.
