Tyler Gillmen shut out Barkman Oil, the second-ranked team in the George B. Kelley Federation, for six innings. Unfortunately for Gillmen and the Tyrone Legion, he had thrown nine innings last Thursday in a win against Locker Room.
League rules state that a pitcher may throw only 15 innings in a seven day period, thus marking the end of Gillmen’s day on the mound.
Gillmen handed a 2-0 lead over to reliever Jamie Levinson, who saw four errors committed behind him en route to allowing seven unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning in the Legion’s 7-4 loss.
In what was Gillmen’s last start of the 2006 regular season, he allowed only two hits and walked one while lowering his season ERA to 2.45.
“Tyler had a really strong season on the mound for us,” Tyrone Legion Manager Mike Boytim said. “It was great to see him rebound from his high school season and prove he’s an excellent pitcher, and I feel absolutely awful that we couldn’t get the win for him tonight.”
Tyler Nash began the top of the seventh by reaching on an error, and after a fly out and three consecutive singles, the score was 2-1 with the bases loaded. Another error allowed the tying run to score, but Levinson struck out Cody Stiffey for the second out. It appeared as though Tyrone would escape the inning tied before another error on the next play gave Barkman Oil the lead.
“Some players were playing out of position, because not everyone showed up tonight, which led to some errors,” Boytim said. “Things like that are going to happen, and unfortunately they came all at once at the worst possible time, but hopefully we can learn from this and know we have to be on our game from start to finish once the playoffs start.”
Tyrone built their 2-0 lead in the first inning. Gillmen singled with two outs and stole second. Tyler Hoover followed with a RBI single before Levinson drew a walk. Doug Morrow reached on an error, and Hoover hustled home to give the Legion an advantage.
Morrow reached on an error to begin a Tyrone rally in the final inning as well. With one out and Morrow on first, Mike Romano drew a walk, and Tyler Conrad’s ground out moved both runners up a base. Shayne Tate followed with a two-run triple, but Barkman Oil hurler Tyler Nash, who struck out eight in a complete game victory, retired the side without further damage.
“The first six innings we showed that we can play with any team, even when we are missing three of our starters,” Boytim said. “But the last inning showed that one moment of letting up can cost you a game, and have to remember that this weekend in the playoffs.”
Tyrone will host Corporal Miller Tuesday in their regular season home finale. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Tyrone Legion has also been scheduled to play a make-up game the day before the playoffs begin, Thursday, at Vets’ Field against Hoss’s at 5:30 p.m.
Sprankle’s Auto Outlet Notes: An arbitration committee found that Saturday’s game between Martin Oil and the Tyrone Legion should never have been played. However, because the Kelley Federation could not find a proper time to reschedule the game, league president Tom Stout and executive director Danny Wilson ordered that the game must be considered final despite being played against the rules… Tate went 2-4 with 2 RBI in his first game in the leadoff spot… Gillmen ended the season 6-1… Andy Ashcroft was robbed of a RBI single in the first when his liner up the middle was snagged out of the air by Nate Dick, who was covering second.
