For the second time in less than a week, the Tyrone Legion had a pitcher pick up two wins in one night. This time it was Tyler Golden, who picked up a win in the completion of a game suspended on June 14th, and he got the win in Wednesday’s regularly scheduled tilt against Dick’s Pharmacy.
In the completed game, Tyrone added to their 10-1 lead to take the game 12-1 in four and one-half innings due to the mercy rule.
Tyrone jumped on Dick’s Pharmacy early, scoring 10 runs in the first inning which featured a two-run single and two-run double by Jamie Levinson as well as a three-run double by David Rodland.
The 10-run deficit was too much for Dick’s, who lost their other match-ups against Tyrone by four and three runs respectively, to overcome.
Dick’s only run, which was unearned, came after R.C. Rudy reached on an error, and Cory Kutruff hit a RBI single.
Kutruff relieved Tom Riggleman on the mound and held Tyrone scoreless in the second and third innings until his lack of control caught up with him in the bottom of the fourth.
After Doug Morrow led off with a single, Kutruff walked Jesse Hertzler, Tyler Conrad and Golden to push across a run. Tyler Gillmen added a sacrifice fly for the final tally.
“Although we swept the season series with Dick’s Pharmacy, they were right there with us most of the time, but in this game we were able to jump out early and get big hits from Jamie and Dave Rodland that put the game away quickly,” Tyrone Legion Manager Mike Boytim said.
In the regularly scheduled game, the Tyrone Legion sprinted out to an 8-0 lead before Dick’s Pharmacy chipped away with four runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to pull close.
Justin Schopp led off the game with a walk, stole second and went to third on a throwing error. Moments later, he scored on a wild pitch to give Tyrone a 1-0 lead.
Ben Lynn doubled Tyrone’s lead with a RBI single that scored Morrow in the second inning, and the Legion scored three in the third thanks in large part to singles by Golden and Gillmen accompanied by RBI ground outs from Shayne Tate and Levinson.
Gillmen stretched the lead to 7-0 in the fourth with a two-run double before Levinson singled and later scored on a wild pitch to give Tyrone an eight run cushion in the fifth.
Golden, the starting pitcher for Tyrone, cruised through five innings, allowing only three hits and two walks, but his defense betrayed him in the sixth inning.
Kutruff reached on an error before two one-out walks loaded the bases. Golden looked as if he would escape the jam when he induced a would-be double play grounder by Josh Ross, but it was thrown away, eventually leading to four unearned runs.
With two outs in the seventh inning, Schopp singled and stole second before Golden helped himself to an insurance run with a RBI single.
Tyler Stiffler began the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, and Brant Clouser ended Golden’s day on the mound with a double. Levinson relieved and struck out two batters before allowing a two-run single by Brian McMillen. With the tying run standing in the on-deck circle, Levinson got a ground out to end the game, 9-6.
“Jamie looked really good finishing up these two games, but I really want to praise Tyler Golden,” Boytim said. “His arm wasn’t in the best shape today, but he gave us six really strong innings and picked up two wins for us tonight.”
With the wins, Tyrone moves to 11-6 a year after going 9-14. The Legion will look to extend their five-game winning streak today as they travel to Hollidaysburg to take on Locker Room at 6 p.m.
Sprankle’s Auto Outlet Notes: With the two wins, Golden’s record improved to 5-3… Golden and Tyler Gillmen have accounted for 10 of Tyrone’s 11 wins… Outfielder Mike Romano is expected to return from a shoulder injury that required surgery in time for Thursday’s game against Locker Room.
