The two local VFW Area 4 / 13 & 14 year-old Teener League teams squared off last night at Ferner Field including Sprankle\’s Auto and Kiwanis.
The game was highlighted by solid defense and pitching from both teams.
The game was tied at 2-2 at the end of the seventh inning with Sprankle\’s Auto scoring three runs in the top of the eighth, which was enough to earn the victory.
Jared Templeton (Sprankle\’s) pitched seven strong innings scattering eight hits, striking out nine, and allowing only two walks to pick up the victory.
Korry Cowher, who went the first five innings for Kiwanis scattered four hits and allowed only two walks in his pitching performance.
The big hitter again was Jordan Taylor (Kiwanis), who went 4-for-4 including a double and two RBI\’s.
Doug Rudy had two hits for Sprankle\’s Auto.
Sprankle\’s started the scoring in the first inning, when Eric Desch walked, stole second, moved to third on a fielders choice and scored on another fielders choice.
In the bottom half of the inning, Evan Brush reached base on an error, stole second, and scored on a base hit by Taylor.
Solid pitching and defense prevailed for the next four innings.
In the top half of the sixth inning, Desch (Sprankle\’s) led off with a double, eventually moved to third base on a fielders choice and scored on a single by Zach Gault.
In the bottom half of the inning, Korry Cowher led off with a single, then Evan Brush singled moving Cowher to third base. The Kiwanis coaching staff sent Brush to second and Cowher was thrown out attempting to steal home on an excellent defensive play by the Sprankle\’s Auto team. Taylor then doubled in the gap scoring Brush to tie the game at 2-2.
In the top half of the eighth inning, Sprankle’s’ Auto scored three runs as Derrick Emigh singled to lead off the inning, Doug Rudy then did so as well. Both Rudy and Emigh advanced a base on a fielders choice hit to second base by Jordan Farretta. Zach Gault then hit a hard grounder to third base that was misplayed by the Kiwanis defender allowing one run to score making it 3-2. Ridge Colyer then reach base on a walk and stole to second base. Austen Barefoot then singled to plate two more insurance runs.
The Kiwanis team then loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning but failed to plate any additional runs.
Sprankle\’s Auto improved its record to 3-2, while Kiwanis dropped to 1-3.
