The Lady Eagles experienced a slump in their defense Monday, that facilitated a loss to Hollidaysburg 7-0 on the victor’s softball diamond.
The game opened thunderously for the Golden Tigers, with a home run by first baseman Taylor Griffith to highlight the bottom of the first and set the pace for the rest of the game.
Tyrone’s girls had several strong hits to open the game, but the Hollidaysburg outfield was on the ball to leave the Eagles high and dry throughout the game.
In the top of the second, pitcher Jess Walters struck out two Lady Eagles to leave the field wide open for Hollidaysburg. However, Tyrone’s defense began to heat up during this inning, preventing any score off of some powerful hits which included a double by Walters.
At the top of the third, the Golden Tigers pounded in several important base hits as well as taking advantage of a few critical fielding errors by Tyrone, resulting in three runs scored by Jackie Smith, Taylor Griffith and Marissa Luther which brought the score to 4-0.
Tyrone came back in the bottom of the inning, hoping to counteract the damage with another round of well placed, strong singles. Unfortunately for them, Hollidaysburg’s outfield was going strong on Monday and managed to deflect anything that Tyrone could throw at them.
The fourth inning was quiet for both teams, but the fifth spelled success for Hollidaysburg as the Lady Eagles’ game began to slip. Sara Eckerd of Hollidaysburg got on with a single to left field and was batted home by the Tiger’s second homer of the day, courtesy of third baseman Jackie Smith. At this point Tyrone began looking discouraged and allowed several great plays by the Tigers to pass them by.
In the sixth inning, Alexis Class of Hollidaysburg, blasted a double out to center, and was batted home by another fantastic double by left fielder Marissa Luther.
In the top of the seventh, Tyrone again managed some powerful hits which were well fielded by the Lady Tigers, ending the game at seven-zero for Hollidaysburg.
Tyrone will compete again at home on Thursday against Huntingdon at 4 PM.
