The Bellwood-Antis track teams continued a tough opening stretch on Tuesday by hosting Philipsburg-Osceola and Chestnut Ridge. The B-A boys (2-2) bashed Philipsburg-Osceola 103-47, but dropped their second meet of the season to undefeated Chestnut Ridge (4-0) 82-68.
The Lady Blue Devils were held to just four wins in the 18 events in falling to Chestnut Ridge 82-68 and to once-beaten Philipsburg-Osceola (4-1) 84-65.
Brandon Pruznak was a double winner for the Bellwood-Antis boys with victories in the 200 and 400 dashes, and also anchored the winning 1600 relay team, composed of Evan Celmo, Adam Mueller, Ben Hatch and Pruznak. Hatch added a victory in the 800 run, Josh Ervine won the 1600, Mueller was victorious in the 300 intermediate hurdles, Dustin Harris won the javelin and Tony DelGrosso won the shot put.
Brandon Humphreys picked up second place finishes in the long jump and triple jump, Mueller in the 110 high hurdles, DelGrosso in the javelin, Todd Narehood in the shot put and Ricky Shawley in the pole vault.
“We have already run some pretty good teams, we start the season off with some pretty tough teams,” said Bellwood-Antis boys coach Nick Lovrich. “Chestnut Ridge has about the same depth that we have, but they were able to get more seconds and that made the difference.
“Josh Ervine has been a good surprise. He was feeling his way through as a senior out for track for the first time, but has begun to be a consistently good distance runner, which is what we need. Ben Hatch and Brandon Pruznak and Tony DelGrosso have been doing a great job for us for two years now and the kind of expect it from them. Brandon Humphreys has really stepped up this year. He has matured a lot physically, largely due to off season lifting and running and has improved his jumping and sprinting abilities.”
Chelsea Wilson won the 400 dash and Ashley Mueller took the 100 intermediate hurdles to give the Lady Blue Devils their only individual victories, and Lauren Leap had a hand in a pair of relay wins. Lauren Carter, Erica Greene and Mueller joined Leap on the 400 relay, and Kelly Killinger, Wilson and Jannelle Wilt completed the 1600 relay team.
Carter was second in the 200, Sarah Bell was second in the 3200, Kristyne Ginter was second in the javelin and Rachel Bilka was second in the pole vault for the Lady Blue Devils.
“We have been running against some tough competition, both Chestnut Ridge and Philipsburg-Osceola are good teams,” said B-A girls coach julia Roseborough. “We were running short-handed due to several of our girls battling illness, but Philipsburg has very good dustance runners, so, I don’t know if we could have done any better. We definitely have a couple of places where we need to work or change around some things.
“We also started out slowly last year and eventually got it turned around when we got into our league meets. Hopefully we can do the same thing before the league meets begin next week. We just have to keep on working.”
It doesn’t get any easier for the young Bellwood-Antis track teams, which host Hollidaysburg on Thursday. The meet will begin at 3:45 p.m.
