The Tyrone Junior High Boys basketball teams traveled out Route 45 Tuesday night to Penns Valley High School to take on the Rams for the second time this season. Their first encounter on December 13th resulted in two wins for the young Eagles. The result would be the same this time as well as the 8th graders won 33-15, and the 9th graders 31-18.
Coach Elvey’s 8th grade team got off to their characteristic fast start as they put up 12-1 and 7-2 scoring margins in the first two periods to go up 19-3 at halftime. The Rams slowed the Eagles down a bit in the second half as Tyrone substituted, and the 8th graders raised their record to 12-0 with a 33-15 win. Eric Desch scored 11 and Jordan Taylor 8 to fuel the victory.

Tyrone’s 9th grade team faced a smaller but determined Penns Valley team that slowed down the Eagles attack with pressure on the ball handler, and a full court press. The Eagles managed to jump out to an 8-3 first quarter lead, and stretched it to a 17-6 advantage by halftime. But the Rams made a game of it for a while in the third quarter, getting as close as 17-11 and holding the Eagles scoreless until Nate Dane hit a short jumper with 3 minutes to go. Finishing out the quarter, a missed shot was alertly grabbed underneath by John Shaffer for a putback basket and a pass by Dane out to Ben Ingle above the key resulted in a 3-pointer to earn Tyrone a 24-11 lead. The two teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter, and Tyrone won 31-18. Nate Dane led the Eagles in scoring with 9 points, followed closely by Kyle Updyke with 7 and John Shaffer with 6. Wes Young and Ross Black also contributed some valuable minutes off to bench to combine for 6 points. The win raised Coach Mark Mitchell’s team to an 11-1 record.
