The Eagles had a rough home loss last Friday against Bald Eagle Area and looked to bounce back with a couple days off before traveling to Bishop Guilfoyle. Wednesday night, Tyrone took on a 9-4 Marauder team that previously beat Tyrone by 17 points in Tyrone.
Byron Kost, one of Tyrone’s leading scorers, started off the game with a triple from the corner. He was at it again, but Sean McConnell quickly matched him at the other end of the court as he knocked down an uncontested trey to tie it at three.
Leonard Wilson and Shane Barr hit back-to-back shots for Tyrone to take a 7-3 lead with 5:20 to go in the quarter. Tyrone jumped out early, but Tom Wardrop made a wild lay-up that looked as if he was closing his eyes before he shot it.
Wardrop’s shot started a BG 11-2 run, taking a 14-9 lead with 2:14 to go in the first quarter. Adam Meyers played big for BG as he took care of the paint early in the game that gave the Marauders opportunities to drive with McConnell and create inside the paint. Meyers scored seven of the 11 Marauders points during the run.
Kost quickly ended the 11-2 run as he nailed a trey to cut the lead to 14-12 with 1:42 to go in the first quarter. BG answered with a Wardrop bank-shot, making it 16-12, but Kost knocked in another trey, cutting it to just one.
Tyrone was answering everything BG threw on the table, but McConnell was just crushing Tyrone’s defense as he nailed a trey with time running down in the first quarter, spreading the score, 19-15.
After one quarter of play, Kost led Tyrone all scorers with nine, all treys and McConnell led his team with eight. It was an offensive first quarter, as players seemed to have open shots all over the floor.
Wilson started his offensive attack as he intercepted the first pass from Steve St. John and took it coast-to-coast for the “and-one” where he would miss his only free throw of the entire game. Tyrone trailed by just two points after the lay-up, 19-17, but Kevin Floyd came off of the bench to hit two of his ten points on an offensive rebound.
With a four point cushion, BG looked to send Tyrone to the locker room early as the Marauders tore off a 9-0 run to make it 30-19. Wardrop scored four of the nine points on the run as BG forced Tyrone to call a timeout to slow their offense down.
After the timeout, Wilson and Johnny Franco scored the last five points of the half to cut the 11 point lead to just six, 30-24. Tyrone eliminated some damage, but had a lot of room to cover to get back into the game.
Wardrop didn’t waste time for BG as he hit a runner in the lane to extend the lead to eight points with 7:36 to go in the third. Wilson quickly answered the lay-up with two foul shots, then stole a pass and hit two more foul shots on the four-point swing, making it 32-28 (6:35).
On the ensuing possession, McConnell sunk a deep three from at least three feet behind the arc, putting BG back on top, 35-28. It was back and forth the entire fourth, but Tyrone couldn’t make any type of run to get back into the game. With a Kost trey at 4:16 in the third, Tyrone trailed 31-37 and didn’t score until :40 to go in the third quarter.
Bishop Guilfoyle went on another 9-0 run, going up 46-31 until Doug Morrow and Josh Clark netted four points to end the quarter and make the score just 46-35. With the game almost out of reach, Tyrone needed almost a miracle to stop McConnell as he extended his total to 16 points after three-quarters of play.
The fourth quarter was a wild one as Tyrone began a comeback that no one believed could happen. With a quick 4-0 run from Wilson and Steve Catich, Tyrone began to pour it on as they would tear off an 11-2 run, cutting the lead to just two points with 3:14 to go (48-46). Wilson led the rout with seven points, five of which were foul shots. Clark added three points on the run, but BG did not give up yet.
The Marauders quickly turned Tyrone’s smile into a frown as they jumped back out to an eight point lead behind Floyd as he scored six straight points, putting BG up 54-46 with just 1:12 to go in the game.
After a Catich lay-up with :59 to go in the game, Tyrone called a timeout as they trailed 54-48. The keep-away game was now in tact for BG as Tyrone had to hack away to get the ball back in order to get back in the game.
Kost quickly fouled St. John, taking two seconds off of the clock as he would sink one of two which put BG ahead 55-48 with :57 seconds left in the game. The lead was seven, but Tyrone did not look at the lead and focused on making their shots.
On the next possession, Tyrone spotted Kost open in the corner where he would nail his fifth trey of the game, cutting the score to just four points with :50 seconds left in the game (55-51). The Tyrone fans began to wonder if we could pull off the miracle comeback as Tyrone quickly fouled St. John once again where he would hit one of two, extending the lead slightly to five, 56-51(:46).
After the miss, Tyrone hurried the ball up the floor, but couldn’t find an opening. After six or seven passes, Kost finally realized that they needed to score as he pulled a “sick” crossover on St. John and dialed a long bomb in his face, cutting the lead to 56-54 with :30 to go. It was an exciting finish for Tyrone as head coach Mike Harris called a timeout with :29 to go in the game.
Abruptly after the timeout, St. John was fouled for a third straight time, but this time nailed both free throws to make it 58-54 with just :27 seconds left.
St. John heavily guarded Kost on the next possession as Tyrone looked to feed him the “rock” for an important trey, but Wilson decided that he wanted some action and released a scary and unusual trey that hit nothin’ but net. The crowd went crazy, but there was :16 seconds left as time ran off the clock.
The pressure on the in bound pass from Tyrone forced Adam Meyers to fire a pass straight into the crowd on a miscommunication with McConnell.
With 9.5 seconds remaining in the game, BG called a timeout to make sure that Kost did not get a last second opportunity. As the Eagles came out, down 58-57 with 9.5 seconds left, they aligned themselves in a line under the basket.
Kost received a back screen from Catich, McConnell read it perfect, but Catich rolled perfectly off of a back screen from Clark that sprung him free where he would get fouled on the way to the basket with 8.0 seconds left.
Being a sophomore, these foul shots had to be nerve-racking, but the kid was clutch as he sunk both shots to take a 59-58 lead with just 8.0 left in the game.
Tyrone called a timeout, mainly to discuss how to stop McConnell from getting the ball. Well, Tyrone double-teamed McConnell, and Meyers, once again, threw the ball right into the hands of Franco.
Franco took a few dribbles to get passed half-court, then quickly sent a pass to Barr. Barr pump-faked, then took a few dribbles to the paint where he was fouled. There was some controversy, however, as the play started with 8.0 seconds and finished with 5.1. The play seemed to take at least five or six seconds, but what went wrong, nobody knows.
Barr sunk both free throws, making the game 61-58 with just 5.1 to go. McConnell quickly took the pass and forced it up the floor where he took a long, off-balanced three that hit the front of the rim, bounced straight up in the air and came straight through the hoop with no time remaining. The Marauder crowd went crazy as they tied the game and pulled all of the momentum back to their side.
The overtime period was a blowout, however, as Kost and Wilson fouled out within the first minute. Both of these players accumulated 44 of their 66 points in the game. Without them, Tyrone really had no offensive spark as McConnell took advantage of the situation by scoring eight of his game-high 30 points in the extra frame.
“When both Wilson and Kost fouled out, we lost 50 percent of our scoring,” Tyrone coach Mike Harris said. “That really hurt us and it was tough to recover from that.”
Tyrone was outscored 17-5 in overtime, losing a heart breaker on the road, 78-66. Wilson scored 26, going 13-14 from the foul line. Kost nailed six treys, scoring 18 in the loss at BG. Tyrone shot 23-28 from the foul line in the loss, but it was the best they shot from the foul line all year. Tyrone fell to 6-9 and 4-5 in the conference after Wednesday night’s game and look to double-up on Lewistown this Friday in Tyrone.

Tyrone Jayvee lose on road
Ethan Etters recorded 14 points despite the loss at Bishop Guilfoyle Wednesday night. Tyrone plays Lewistown Friday night as they try to bounce back after the tough loss.
Logan McDaniel led all scorers for Bishop Guilfoyle as he lit up 20 points on Tyrone in their home victory.
