Starting what would turn out to be a six game sweep by Tyrone’s boys and girls basketball teams over Philipsburg Friday, the ninth and eighth grade Eagles‚ boys pounded the Mountie junior high with 30-plus points margins of victory.
The eighth graders got things going with a 43-11 victory in the Junior High pre-lim game, where they took off on a 14-3 first quarter lead, and increased that lead to 25-5 by halftime.
The young Mounties had a little more success in the third quarter, scoring six points to Tyrone’s 12, but were shut out in the fourth.
Nine Eagles made it into the scoring column, led by Levi Riehart’s 10 points and Eric Desch with six.
The win raised the Tyrone eighth grade record to a still undefeated 9-0.

In the 9th grade game, the Golden Eagles used two twin 20-2 quarters to race to a 40-4 halftime lead.
Three starters scored all their points in the first half before relinquishing the floor to the second team.
Nate Dane pounded in four baskets from inside the paint for eight points, Travis Peterman hit two 3-pointers on his way to 12 points, and Kyle Updyke got a game-high 16 points from a 3-pointer and three 3-point plays the old-fashioned way. Ross Black added all of Tyrone’s 8 points in the third quarter.
The Eagles won 54-17 to raise their record to 8-1.
