Bellwood-Antis hasn’t defeated Glendale in wrestling for a long time. On Tuesday night at Glendale, that streak stopped. In the recent history of the B-A wrestling program, three or more forfeits have often been the cause for defeat for the Blue Devils. Glendale wrestlers, to take nothing away from the Vikings, have gotten the upper hand on the mat as well.
Pins by Josh Ervine and Ronnie Wilson coupled with the first mat win for Cody Smith and the first dual meet triumph for Donnie Partner and four forfeits fueled the Blue Devils to a 46-24 victory.
After Robert Shomo repeated a Tri-County Tournament fall by pinning Kris Morder to begin the dual meet at 275, and Aaron O’Shell picked up the only Glendale forfeit win, Partner started Bellwood-Antis on the comeback that resulted in the Blue Devils first win of the 2005-06 season.
Partner (3-6) avenged two losses by falls a year ago, to Booby Chirden, with a solid 9-2 decision over the Glendale junior. Partner, who was pinned by Chirden in both the dual meet and the Tri-County Tournament last year, opened with a takedown and added three back points in the first period, then following a scoreless second stanza, added a takedown and traded reversals for the big win.
After the win at 112 by Partner, Bellwood-Antis picked up forfeits at four of the next four weight classes. Tim Collier (1-0), in the lineup for the first time picked up the freebie at 119, and Shane Noye (2-2) at 125 and Eli Colyer (4-2) at 130 also recorded forfeit wins.
At 135, Ricky Shawley (5-2), back in the B-A lineup after missing the Tri-County Tournament over the weekend, notched two takedowns, a reversal and three sets of nearfall points to win a 12-0 major decision over Jordan Marshall.
Dustin Harris (4-5) picked up the final Glendale forfeit at 140,
“We got a lot of forfeit points, which was nice for us. We’ve been on the other end of that quite frequently,” said Coach Wilson. “This year, we seem to have most of the weights covered and with some extra guys, can move some people around.”
Josh Ervine (10-0) picked up his seventh pin of the year by decking James Haney in 1:29 at 145. Ervine took Haney down to begin the first period and racked up a pair of three-point nearfalls prior to registering the fall.
At 152, Mike Ballard (1-7) led Kelsey Tarr 8-7 after the first two stanzas, but yielded two takedowns and back points to drop a high-scoring 14-10 contest to Tarr. Ballard led 3-2- after one period. In the second period, Tarr received a penalty point and garnered a pair of reversals, but Ballard countered with an escape, takedown and two back points to maintain his slim lead, 8-7, going into the final two minutes.
Ronnie Wilson (7-5) moved up to 160, to pin Matt Queen in 3:17. Both wrestlers weighed in at 152, but Glendale coach Bill Damiano, a former Bellwood-Antis wrestler, moved Queen and several Glendale wrestlers up to attempt matchups better for his Vikings. B-A coach Ron Wilson had both Wilson and Ballard weigh in at 152, and moved Ronnie up to 160, where he recorded a first period takedown and three-point nearfall, then reversed Queen and decked him midway through the second period.
Following Wilson’s win, which wrapped up the B-A win, Glendale picked up a regular decision and pin at the next two weights before Smith closed out the dual with a win.
At 171, Mike Hommer decisioned Garett Wyland (2-6) 11-4, and Cody Carracciolo pinned Josh Keagy (1-5) in 0:40 at 189.
Smith reversed Philip Wombacher at the start of the middle period after a scoreless opening stanza, and added a takedown when Wombacher choose the neutral position to begin the third period for his first win. Smith (1-6) had dropped a 3-2 decision to Wombacher at the Tri-County Tournament.
“It was nice for Donnie Partner and Cody Smith who beat kids they had lost to-Donnie last year and Cody in this year’s Tri-County,” said Coach Wilson. “Both played a big part in what we did today. That win by Donnie was a little bit of a momentum builder. The kids who lost in most instances helped big in not giving up bonus points. We have been saying all along that if we don’t give up big bonus points we are O-K. For the most part, the kids stayed off their backs, scored points whenever they could and wrestled aggressively. We are very happy with what they did.”
Junior High
The B-A junior high won their third straight dual meet downing Glendale’s junior high wrestlers 50-41.
After the two teams traded the lead six times in the early going, Travis Taylor won a 10-3 decision at 130, Kyle Shawley (138) won by major decision, Kyle Canfield (145) and Caleb Stevens (185) won by fall and Gerald price (165) picked up a win by forfeit to secure the victory.
Other wins by B-A wrestlers included pins by Troy Weyant (85), Trey McCracken (100) and Lucas Evans (115), a major decision by Buddy Shaw (105) and regular decision by Danny Noye (80)
