The way last nights game between Tyrone and Bishop Guilfoyle started out it appeared BG had the more explosive offense. Completely dominating on both sides of the ball and having run 42 plays to Tyrone\’s 11 in the first half, one would say the Marauders would at least be winning if not routing Tyrone.
Marauder QB Lance Phillips was very poised and the Marauders controlled the first seven minutes of the game driving to Tyrone\’s 10-yard line, only to come away with nothing. After controlling all but one minute of the first quarter, BG put together a 11-play 81-yard drive ending with a screen pass from Phillips to Benatti to put BG up 6-0.
Enter Shane Tate. Although his first few carries was nothing extraordinary, gaining 15 yards on three carries, his fifth carry set the tone for the rest of his night as he galloped 55 yards on the first play after the kickoff and Dustin Rudasill\’s kick made it 7-6 at the half.
The second half seemed to be the same for Tyrone as they went five plays and out with Phillips taking over at his own 46-yard line. A 24-yard strike to Anthony Williams capped a short three-play drive and BG now led 12-7 three minutes into the third quarter.
A 40 yard Tate run put Tyrone first and ten at the BG-25 but a fumble thwarted that drive. After a BG punt Tyrone took over its own 29-yard line and Tate went to work, with another 40 yard jaunt that set up Tyler Golden’s swing pass to Tate who broke two or three tackles to put the Eagles up for good 14-12. BG came out throwing and Shane Emigh picked off Phillips as the third period ended.
Tate was called on again as he ran five times for 28 yards finishing off with a five-yard burst to push Tyrone into a 21-12 lead.
“We showed poise out there, they have a good QB and the defense stepped it up, I\’m proud of them tonight.” Coach Elvey said after the game.
Ethan Etters was all over the field knocking down several passes except one. That one he caught two yards deep in his own end zone and just sprinted up the right sideline 102 yards as the fourth quarter horn sounded to make the final score 27-12.
“Shane Tate was awesome, the defense did what was needed, and Ethane’s run was fitting.” Elvey beamed.
Tyrone is now 4-3 heading to Penns Valley next Monday night at 6 p.m.
