The Bellwood-Antis cross country teams opened the dual meet section of their 2005 schedule on Tuesday afternoon at Mount Union. In a tri-meet with host Mount Union and Penns valley both the B-A boys and girls split with the two schools to open 1-1.
On the boys side, Penns Valley shut out everybody by taking the top seven places defeating B-A and Mount Union by 15-50 scores. Bellwood-Antis meanwhile claimed the other three top 10 places with Brandon Beech eighth in 20:13, Jamey Rimmey ninth in 20:18 and Josh Ervine 10th in 20:23.
The Blue Devils defeated Mount Union 16-41, with Eli Colyer and Liam Flynn completing the top five scorers for the B-A boys.
“We have three boys at the top, who are experienced veterans who we count on to be at or up near the front,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Julia Roseborough. “They are close in running ability and on any given day any of the three could be our top runner. Josh Ervine is starting to run better with each race. Both Josh and Liam ran much better races on Tuesday and are starting to put things together on the course.
“After our top five, we have a big group of new boys who are running for the first time and are now starting to come on.”
Bellwood-Antis lost to Penns Valley 17-46, but defeated Mount Union 15-47 in the girls race.
In the girls race, Sarah Bell broke up a string of seven Penns Valley runners, with a fourth place finish (24:37), and fellow Lady Blue Devils Brittany Webb and Kelly Killinger completed the top 10 for the girls claiming ninth (Webb) and 10th (Killinger). Both Webb, a junior, and Killinger, a freshman, are running cross country for the first time.
“Penns Valley is loaded this year on both their boys and girls teams,” informed Roseborough. “You always race to win, but the meet went pretty much the way we expected it. Times weren’t very good for any of the teams or individuals, because of the heat being so oppressive. Saying that however, Sara Bell, who is our top runner, ran a pretty decent race. Becca Colyer ran a decent race and newcomers Brittany Webb, Kelly Killinger and Emily O’Shea ran pretty good races.”
The Blue Devils will run in the Altoona Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m., before traveling to Juniata Valley on Tuesday for a tri-meet against Juniata Valley and Bald Eagle Area, beginning at 4 p.m.
