The Tyrone nine and 10 year old All-Stars kicked off the Tyrone Area Youth Baseball Association tournament on July 24, with a 10-7 triumph over neighboring Bellwood.
Each team scored early with three runs in the first inning and then Bellwood took a 7-5 advantage after three frames had been played. That was all the visitors were to score however and Tyrone came back to score five times in the bottom of the fifth inning for the 10-7 win.
In the top of the first, Bellwood loaded the bases on three straight Tyrone errors with one out. Josh Sunderland walked to score Casey Gray. Steffan Wyland scored Tyler McNelis with a single. Another base on balls to Ian O’Shell forced Ethan Hunter home with the third tally of the inning.
Tyrone met the first challenge with all guns blazing. Joey Gearhart singled to open the Tyrone first, moved around on a infield groundout and scored on a single by Jordan Miller. Haden Zook scored on a groundout and Miller came home on a single by Seth Welch.
In the third, Bellwood jumped out in front again with four scores. Hunter reached on an error and Sunderland and Wyland received walks to load the bases. Hunter scored on an error on a ball hit by Cameron Worthing. Seth Hunter walked to force in Sunderland. Kyle Bartlett singled to score both Wyland and Worthing to cap the Bellwood scoring.
Tyrone sliced the Bellwood lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the inning to set the stage for the big rally.
Nate Soellner reached on a error to begin the frame for Tyrone and moved up to second on a fielder’s choice. Miller doubled to plate Soellner and then Lucas Woomer singled in Miller.
Anthony Zimmerman started for Tyrone on the hill, pitching the first three innings allowing seven runs, just one earned on two hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Jacob Belinda pitched the final three innings, holding Bellwood scoreless and hitless, striking out three and walking two to pick up the victory. Casey Gray took the loss for Bellwood pitching two innings of relief, giving up five runs, three earned on three hits with one strikeout and three walks. Tyler McNelis who gave up five runs, all earned on six hits with two Ks and two walks, opened on the mound for Bellwood.
In the all-important fifth inning, Soellner singled and Belinda reached on an error. Miller drilled a double to score both Soellner and Belinda to tie the game at 7-7. Tyrone wasn’t done yet however.
After Woomer hit into a fielder’s choice to eliminate Miller, Welch worked a walk and Zimmerman was safe on an error. Kolten Taylor tripled to score Lucas and Seth with the winning runs. Tyrone added one more on walks to Brad Wirtner and Gearhart.
Miller led Tyrone with three hits and Soellner added two more.
Bellwood’s only base hits were singles by Bartlett and Wyland.
