According to the American Cancer Society, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has been the their premier event to raise awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer since 1993.
On May 18, the American Cancer Society will host the first Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Ladies’ Night Out.
The event will be held at several locations, including the Ramada of Altoona beginning at 5:30 with a get-together for drinks and appetizers.
At 6 p.m. those in attendance will learn about Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and hear important news on breast health issues. Individuals will also have the opportunity to shop and be pampered.
Several local vendors will be on hand throughout the night including Longaberger, Tastefully Simple, Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, Southern Living and more. According to a recent press release, there will also be local manicurists, stylists and massage therapists attending and refreshments served throughout the evening.
The American Cancer Society’s website described Making Strides Against Breast Cancer as “Walks that happen throughout the country, throughout the year that are typically five miles in length. This year, there will be more than 100 walks taking place throughout the nation. “Individuals of all ages are welcome to participate.”
The events are be held rain or shine. There is no time limit associated with the walk, participants may take a much time as needed to complete the event. Also, participants may choose to walk only a portion of the five miles.
The walks raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer through pledges and organization or business sponsors.
According to the ACS release, “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has been the American Cancer Society’s premiere event to boost awareness in the fight against breast cancer. The disease will strike more than 200,000 times this year and claim 40,000 lives.
“The American Cancer Society is a nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.”
