It was a short day at the office for the Tyrone Lady Eagles softball team on Monday at the George O. Martin Field in Bellwood.
After only three innings, the Tyrone girls had scored 17 runs to put an early end to the game against Bellwood-Antis. On the mound, the pitching of Lady Eagle sophomore Stefani Bryan showed signs of a good future for the softball program, keeping Tyrone’s backyard rivals at bay while on offense, the hits just kept coming.
The first inning was amazing for the Lady Eagles, with five consecutive runs scored by Meghan McAllister, Kim Cherry, Missy Stager, Megan Turiano and Heather Stanton to quickly open it up. As the ladies enetered their second time around the linup in the inning, the runs continued to mount up, this time, nine more in a row, with Ashley Ripka, Ashley Pennabaker, and Katie Whitby joining McAllister, Cherry, Stager, Turiano, Stanton and Bryan in crossing home plate for the visitors.
Bellwood-Antis attempted to get back into the ball game with base hits by Christina Pfahler and Kerstin Myers, but with Bryan mowing them down on the mound, that was half of the total of four hits she allowed in the entire game.
The second inning sent six Lady Eagles to bat, a relatively short one by Tyrone with a pair of tallies by McAllister and Stager. Bryan then tallied Tyrone’s final run in the top of the third with Ashley Pennabaker finishing it off with the final RBI to notch a 17-0 three-inning victory.
Tyrone coach Lois Loncher was satisfied with her team’s performance in this game, but was focused on the girls’ schedule for the rest of the week. “It was nice for Stef Bryan and Megan Turiano to pitch today,” commeneted Loncher. They both did some good things. Megan Turiano and Heather Stanton also hit very well today. We hit the ball well and defensively played well again. But the big question mark will be Thursday.”
Tyrone enters the District Six Class AA playoffs at Mount Union on Thursday against the Lady Trojans.
