An early run by senior Katie Whitby for the Lady Eagles on Tuesday failed to be an omen for a successful game to come as the girl’s softball team was defeated 8-4 by Philipsburg-Osceola.
The Lady Mounties held on for longer innings and outran the swift fielding techniques of the Eagles, making them a challenge for the Tyrone squad.
The Eagles finished off their scoring for the day in the third inning, keeping on their toes but losing ground quickly. A run by English for Philipsburg in the second and a triple by Becky McCamley in the third started off their scoring game slowly.
The Mounties came on strong at the top of the fourth, with four runs by Yarger, Burnsworth, Bethany Wilson and Demchak to set the score at 6-3. For the next three innings, the Eagles fought hard with some tremendous hits that were easily plucked out of the air by PO, keeping the score tied and the crowd anxious. Finally, two runs for the Lady Mounties in the seventh, batted in by Gonder and English, finished off the Lady Eagles with a final score of 8-4.
Head Coach Lois Loncher appeared disappointed, but nonetheless optimistic about the day’s turnout, saying, “We competed very well today. This was probably the most intense game of the year as far as inning-to-inning action. There were as couple of calls that could have gone either way which changed the whole complexion of the game. We played with energy and purpose today. We’ve got to play like this against teams of a lesser caliber than Philipsburg.”
Missy Stager roped three hits in her first trips to the plate, for the Lady Eagles, following a hand injury which restricted her from batting. Hilary McNelis, Kim Cherry and Megan Turiano each added two hits.
The Lady Eagles’ (3-7) game against Bellwood Antis has been moved from Monday to today, Wednesday, April 27th, at 4:30 p.m. at Tyrone.
