A tremendous first inning for the Lady Eagles Softball team wowed crowds and opponents alike at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex on Wednesday in their match up against Bellwood Antis. In only four innings, the Eagles managed to shut down the Lady Blue Devils, ending the game with a final score of 16-0.
Opening the first inning with eight consecutive runs by Katie Whitby, Hilary McNelis, Missy Stager, Kim Cherry, Megan Turiano, Megan McAllister, Heather Stanton and Ashley Ripka, the mood of the game was light and optimistic for Tyrone from the very beginning.
Thanks to a strong pitching game by Senior Hilary McNelis, Bellwood managed no more than five batters in a single inning, with no less than two strikeouts in each. With only three innings in which to put sixteen runs under their belts, the Eagles proved that slow and steady is not always the way to play the game.
The runs just kept coming for the Eagles with a double by McAllister in the second, followed by a single by Stanton, who both came home to set the score at 10-0.
Following a “slow” second inning, the g irls picked up the pace again in the third, brining in their last six runs to end the game abruptly at 16-0.
Throughout the ballgame, the Lady Blue Devils proved to be a veritable straw man for the Eagles, managing only two successful hits in merely eleven at bats.
Pam Weyant and Dani Riley were the only Blue Devils able to collect hits off McNelis.
Tyrone coaches were in high spirits following the game, but look forward to a challenge when the Eagles, who improved to 4-7, meet Bald Eagle Area on Thursday, home at 4:30 p.m. for Senior Night. The Lady Blue Devils (1-11) travel to Claysburg-Kimmel for a 4 p.m. contest on Thursday.
