The Central PA Wolves Ice Hockey team opened play in the Annual Dean Patterson Little Stanley Cup Tournament on Monday with a solid 5-1 victory over the Altoona varsity at Galactic Ice in Lakemont.
The Wolves fired 24 shots on goal and scored a pair of goals in each of the first two periods to breeze to the triumph.
Kyle Hopkins (State College) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 5:24 into the game and Josh Kennedy (Central) added a score with an assist by Chris Carthew (Chestnut Ridge) five minutes later.
Then in the second period, Adam Erlichman (Bedford) assisted on a goal by Issac Fink (Bald Eagle Area) just under seven minutes into the period and Carthew added a goal of his own three minutes later on an assist by Craig Thompson (Central).
In the final period, the two squads traded goals with Central PA upping their lead to 5-0 on a score by Thompson with an assist from Carthew late in the period and Altoona retaliated with their only goal a half minute later to set the final.
Fred Dorman (Bellwood-Antis) stopped 14 of 15 shots for the Wolves.
For their win, Central PA received five and 1/2 tournament points (see explanation below), while Altoona received 1/2 point.
The Wolves next varsity game is tonight at Galactic Ice against Hollidaysburg at 7 p.m.
