In a hard fought backyard battle between two strong junior high basketball teams, the Bellwood-Antis Blue Devils came away with a 37-30 overtime victory over the visiting Golden Eagles Monday. The win stopped Tyrone’s winning streak at 12 games, and dropped their record to 13-3 on the season.
There was no scoring in the first quarter until a free throw by Josh Bradley at 1:25 gave Tyrone a 1-0 lead. But an errant pass was intercepted for a Bellwood layup. And with six seconds left, Jon Hampton hit Brandon Gehret with a pass down the middle to score a layup and give Tyrone a 3-2 lead.
The game stayed tight in the second quarter with Tyrone having a 10-9 edge behind 4 points from Ethan Etters. And the Eagles went into the locker room up only 13-11.
Following intermission, the Eagles worked hard to build a 22-16 lead behind a three-pointer by Jon Hampton and baskets from McCaulley, Brooks, and Gehret. But those were the last field goals they would get in regulation, as the Blue Devils hustled to outplay Tyrone in the 4th quarter, making three steals for layups and outscoring Tyrone 10-4 to force an overtime tied at 26-26.
At 2:25 left in the three minute overtime, Bellwood struck first with a turn-around jumper down low to go up 28-26. Jon Hampton had an opportunity to tie after being fouled on a layup attempt, but missed both free throws. Then at 1:46, the Blue Devils hit a three-pointer from the top of the circle to take a commanding 33-26 lead. With a minute to go, Josh Bradley hit an underhand putback to get within five at 33-28. But the Eagles couldn’t get any closer as they were forced to foul the Blue Devils, who calmly hit almost all of their remaining free throws to put the game out of reach 37-30.
Brandon Gehret led the Eagles with nine points.
Ben Hatch led Bellwood-Antis with 18 points and Allen Wertz added 10 for the Blue Devils, who raised their record to 18-2.
Tyrone and Bellwood-Antis will play again Thursday, Feb. 10, on the Eagles home court. And then the Eagles will take on Hollidaysburg Junior High at home on Friday Feb. 11.
