Bellwood-Antis opened the home portion of their wrestling schedule in the B-A Middle School gym on Tuesday night. Northern Bedford rode eight pins to a 60-14 victory, including four in a row and seven out of nine weight classes from 130-215.
The Blue Devils were able to post victories by Josh Ervine at 140, and Dwayne Cherry at 189, during that streak.
Ervine recorded a pair of first period takedowns to take a 4-1 lead after one period, then added two of the three reversals scored in the middle stanza against Zack Hart. With no scoring in the third period, Ervine pulled off the 8-3 triumph.
Cherry, wrestling for the first time, since the football team ended their season, registered a takedown over Caleb Hagelberger and quickly worked for the first period fall in 1:15.
The only other Bellwood-Antis wrestler to post a win was Eli Colyer, who started off the dual meet with his second straight win by pin. Colyer opened up a 5-0 advantage after one period with a takedown and nearfall. Beginning the second period on the bottom, Colyer reversed Caleb Musselman to his back for two back points and the fall at the 3:54 mark, just beating the buzzer at the end of the middle period.
Bellwood-Antis and Northern Bedford fought tough and nail at 125 and 275 and Northern managed to get wins in both.
At 125, it appeared Bellwood-Antis junior Brandon Beech had pulled out a win at the buzzer ending the third period, but referee Jim Rivello signaled the takedown and 4-2 win to Northern Bedford’s Dan Oberman. After a scoreless opening period, Oberman reversed Beech for a 2-0 lead. Beech escaped before the period ended and again in the third period after starting in the down position at the beginning of the final period to knot the score at 2-2, until the last-second heroics.
At 275, B-A coach moved up Brian Dougherty, who had weighed in at 215, to 275. Dougherty, who weighed in at about 192, did his best to stay away from true heavyweight Derrick Eshleman as the two contestants danced their way through most of the first five and a half minutes. Eshleman took a 2-0 lead on a penalty point for two stall warnings to Dougherty and a second-period escape. Dougherty got behind Eshleman for a late third-period takedown to send the match to overtime. Almost immediately Eshleman hit a takedown for a 4-2 overtime win.
Ricky Shawley was pinned by Northern’s Jared Miller at 130, Matt Mellott decked Ronnie Wilson at 135, Josh Williams pinned Dustin Harris at 145, Tyler Cogan pinned Ron Colyer at 152, after a takedown and two back points gave Colyer a 4-0 first-period lead, Greg Kilgore pinned Josh Hanna at 160, Jonathan Davila was pinned by Derrick Brown at 171, Caleb Stevens was decked by Dylan Snowberger at 215 and Don Partner was pinned at 103, by Steve Risbon.
The Blue Devils, who will travel to Claysburg on Friday and Saturday for the Tri-County Tournament, forfeited only one weight class to Northern Bedford.
“We were aggressive tonight, we had good effort,” said Bellwood-Antis Coach Ron Wilson. “The kids were doing some things off the bottom, which we had been working hard on in practice, which we hadn’t been doing before. Our kids are improving, but they are very green. It will take some matches before we can say that we are a good wrestling team.”
