Six point decisions were the standard at Claysburg as the Claysburg-Kimmel Bulldogs hammered the Bellwood-Antis Blue Devils 65-12 on Tuesday night in the varsity wrestling meet. The B-A junior high took the preliminary meet 62-24 for their second victory of the season.
The varsity encounter began at the 160-pound weight class.
Only Dwayne Cherry (189) and Josh Ervine (140) were able to crack the Claysburg-Kimmel onslaught. The Bulldogs showed superiority on their feet with a 23-3 margin in takedowns and had a 4-1 advantage in nearfalls as well to win the battle down on the mat.
Cherry (11-4) wasted no time in taking Andy Ody down, turned him once for three back points, the Blue Devils only nearfall of the night, and then once more for the fall at the 1:33 mark of the opening period.
Ervine (13-7) didn’t use much more mat time at 140, The B-A junior worked a takedown on Levi Love for all the scoring in the first period, then took Love down again when the Claysburg grappler chose to start the middle period with both wrestlers on their feet in the neutral position. Ervine stacked Love for the fall in 2:51.
The final match at 152, between Blue Devil Ronnie Colyer and the Bulldogs Shane Weyant, was probably the most exciting.
Weyant went into the second period with a 4-1 lead on two takedowns, but the two rolled each other around for a total of six takedowns before Weyant eventually emerged with a 12-8 win. Colyer (3-11) took the bottom position to begin the second stanza and reversed Weyant, was reversed, gained an escape and got taken down, then reversed Weyant again to get to the final two minutes down 8-6. Weyant reversed Colyer from the bottom, and was reversed by the B-A senior to close the lead to 10-8, but Weyant got the last reversal to wrap up the 12-8 decision.
At 103, Kelly Sell pinned B-A ninth grader Donnie Partner (2-15) in just 0:20. Aaron Dorobo pinned Ronnie Wilson (5-14) in 3:47, at 135. Dolan Mosser pinned Dustin Harris (6-15) in 1:23, at 145. Matt Aungst majored Ricky Shawley (9-9) 10-1 at 125. Garett Wyland and Ian Leslie were involved in a match that centered on moves at the buzzer. Leslie registered a takedown in the first period with one second left to take the initial lead 2-0 and then got the fall over Wyland with just six seconds to go in the match.
Claysburg’s two very legitimate state place hopefuls both were given workouts, but in the end the talented duo of Adam Whetstone (18-0) and Ryan McIntyre (15-2) had little trouble in gaining victories.
At 119, Whetstone downed Eli Colyer (13-5) with a 16-4 major decision, using a pair of takedowns in each of the three periods and adding a second-period reversal and final-stanza nearfall. McIntyre built up a 7-0 advantage over Brandon Beech (13-9) after one period, on the way to a 3:37 pin.
“We knew Claysburg was really good coming in so it was clear what we were up against from the start,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Ron Wilson. “But I would have liked to see us be more successful in some of the matches that we lost. Wrestling is a sport of matchups, and we didn’t match up against them very well. Some of our better kids wrestled their better kids and some of their better kids have been to states rthe last few years.
“Our kids went out there and gave valiant efforts. It wasn’t from lack of trying, but our kids have to get better.”
The B-A junior high rode eight forfeit wins to their convincing victory. On the mat, Tim Collier (110) won by pin, Shane Noye (115) won by a technical fall, and Dustin Pruznak (122) won by regular decision.
In the match that started at the lowest weight class and ended as they all used to at the heavyweight class, Troy Weyant (75), Tyler McCracken (80), Trey Mock (100), Ryan Wolfe (105), Nick Alley (138), Levi Hollen (145) Jerry Stouffer (155) and Ben Martinez (250) all won by forfeit.
