Penns Valley senior Katrina Greer has had some big games against the Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devils, but probably none any bigger than her performance at Penns Valley on Monday night. Greer outscored the Lady Blue Devils in the first half with 15 points out of the gate and added to the effort with 15 more second-half points to outscore the B-A girls for the entire game with Penns Valley winning easily 66-28 to avenge a 42-39 Bellwood-Antis victory at Bellwood on Dec. 20.
Penns Valley (4-0 in the Juniata Valley League second cycle and 12-6 overall) scored the first 10 points of the game before Lady Blue Devil senior Lindsey Claar broke the string with a bucket and Lauren Carter hit back-to-back baskets to slice the Lady Rams margin to 10-6. Most of the game could be measured by a series of streaks, very few of which would prove beneficial to the Lady Blue Devils however, and Penns Valley then went on an 8-0 run to jack their lead back up to 20-6.
Greer and B-A senior Allison Sinisi traded field goals, but then the Lady Rams outscored Bellwood-Antis 10-3 to end the first half solidly in the lead, 32-11. A Carter basket and Jamie Smith foul shot were all the Lady Blue Devils were able to muster in that stretch.
Four different Penns Valley players took a turn with a basket each to begin the third period before Greer and the Blue Devils’ Steph Hatch scored two baskets apiece. Sinisi fired up a basket and Carter added a free throw to end the quarter, but the Lady Blue Devils were still in a huge 46-18 hole to begin the fourth quarter.
Penns Valley shot 23 foul shots, converting 20, including 10 of 11 by Greer, who opened the fourth quarter with six straight points, a basket and four-of-four from the charity stripe Smith hit a free throw and basket down the stretch, Sinisi added a bucket and Jenna Ralston pumped in the only trey of the game by either team and a two-point field goal, but Penns Valley kept running further away, outscoring the Lady Blue Devils 20-10 in the fourth quarter, ending the game by putting the final seven points in the net.
Bellwood-Antis went to the foul line just seven times, converting three.
Steph Hatch was held scoreless in the first half for Bellwood-Antis, eventually finishing with four points, but made herself known with five rebounds, nine blocks and three steals. Lauren Carter led the B-A girls in scoring with seven points and five rebounds. Allison Sinisi had six points, Jenna Ralston five, and Jamie Smith four points, four assists and three steals. Shalee Hunter pulled down four rebounds in limited action in the fourth quarter.
Kara Myers had eight points and Kristen Henry six points for Penns Valley to back Greer, who had just two points in the Bellwood-Antis win at Bellwood.
“Penns Valley came out on fire. Katrina hit some big shots,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Nick Lovrich. “She was on tonight. When we played them last time and they kind of suffered because of it. I think they had a lot of revenge in their eyes and they really took it to us.”
Penns Valley also won big in the junior varsity game handing the winless B-A junior varsity girls a 43-6 loss. Chelsea Young scored four points and Brittany Webb added two. Jessica Parson pulled down seven rebounds and Shalee Hunter had six boards.
Abby Ash and Steph Blackwell each scored eight points for Penns Valley.
Bellwood-Antis will travel to Claysburg on Thursday for a game against the Lady Bulldogs (4-0 in the JVL, 17-1 overall). The Jayvee contest will begin at 6 p.m. and the varsity game will follow at 7:30.
