The Tyrone wrestling team jumped out to a 12-0 lead after two weight classes and then provided a stopper every time Lewistown attempted to get back into the match on Tuesday night at Lewistown to improve to 6-1 with a 41-33 triumph.
With the match beginning at the 135-pound weight class, Tyrone senior David Miller took Matt Gregg down a total of five times and led 17-3 when he decked his foe at the 4:56 mark to open the dual. Sam McCloskey followed at 140 with a 3:28 pin job. McCloskey was up 4-2 after one period when Lewistown’s Zach Wagner took bottom to begin the second stanza. S am quickly turned and pinned Wagner for a quick 12-0 advantage, putting the pressure on the Panthers with the meat of the Tyrone lineup waiting in the wings.
Wins at 145 and 152 pulled Lewistown back into the match 12-9, but Tyrone 160-pounder Brice Mertiff recorded a first period fall over Adam Piper to extend the Eagle lead to 18-9.
Adam Stout and Thad Gearhart scored major decisions to close the gap to 18-17. But once again Tyrone had the answer.
This time, it was Heath Walk, who moved up to 215, pinning Nick Nable and Terry Tate at 275, decking Jeff Yohn to cool Lewistown down a bit and increase the margin to 30-17.
Nick Bonson tried to get his team back in the running at 103, with a fall, but T. J. Albright wrapped up the win for Tyrone, holding just a 4-0 lead when he pinned Justin Shafranich at the 3:54 mark of the middle period to give the Eagles a 36-23 lead. Robert Waite added to the total with a 19-4 tech fall over Adam Spickler. Waite registered five takedowns, two sets of nearfalls and two escapes in the win.
Lewistown was able to close the score to 41-33 with a major decision and fall in the final two weight classes, but couldn’t keep the Golden Eagles from winning their sixth match in a row after dropping their opener to Indian Valley.
“This was a total team effort tonight,” said Tyrone coach Blair Packer. “We are starting to come together as one. Each kid did his job tonight. We expected this match to be closer than what it turned out to be. The coaching staff is totally pleased with the progress the team is making at this point of the season.”
