With Leonard Wilson just finishing up the football run last week, “getting back into the basketball mode” didn’t take long as he tossed in 18 points in the first half as Tyrone (1-1) handed Big Spring (District 3) a 68-52 loss to send the Eagles into the semi-finals of the Tiger Classic against the Hollidaysburg/ Bellefonte winner.
Up 10-6 early on Tad Chamberlain, in less than 20 seconds scored a putback and had one of his three blocks for the night and Wilson converted it into an easy layup.
Tyrone led 20-16 going into the second quarter when it seems the springs came apart and the Eagles dominating press took over. Two minutes into the quarter Adam Corle stepped in front of the inbounds and landed an easy layup, then seconds later he duplicated the feat for two more.
“We get after it in practice and we get after it in the game as well.” Coach Harris stated “They couldn’t figure our press out”.
Then it was Wilson’s turn as he stole two consecutive passes and traded them in for points.
But with all this happening Kyle MacMillan and Dan Erickson was keeping the Bulldogs in it as they teamed for 23 points. The Bulldogs never got closer than six points as Tyrone pulled away to a 41-26 halftime lead.
The third quarter was all Tyrone as they yielded the first four points, then put the Bulldogs away with an impressive 15-0 run and the Golden Eagles were up by 26 halfway thru the third quarter.
Chamberlain claimed, “The turning point of the game was getting points off our press in that third period.”
Coach Harris commented “The kids played hard, Josh Crabtree, Josh Clark all played well and we cut down on our turnovers and that helped.”
Tyrone will play Saturday with the time to be announced as well as the Lady Eagles who will play the Hollidaysburg girls for the championship of the girls section of the Golden Tiger Holiday Tournament.
Eagle bits: Tyrone shot 45% from the field and 82% from the charity stripe….Josh Clark had 3 three pointers and 12 points ….Adam Corle also tallied double figures with 11….Wilson (5) and Corle (4)) led the team in steals.
