The Tyrone Golden Eagle basketball team had two weeks without playing a single game were now faced with playing four games in five days. After handily beating up on Big Spring Friday night, in the Golden Tiger Holiday Tournament, the Eagles were then pitted with Hollidaysburg in the Tigers’ own tournament on their home court.
The game started out like two heavyweights going toe-to-toe, matching points-for-points with Tyrone jumping out to a 12-5 lead with a couple treys from Adam Corle and four big points off the bench with Byron Kost.
But Tyson Maugle proved to be the haymaker with a barrage of three pointers in the first half. With two triples in the first period Hollidaysburg claimed the lead with 1:15 to go and the score after one was 17-16.
The second stanza started with a jumper from Kost to put the Eagles ahead but that would be Tyrone’s last lead of the night.
“Byron played real well coming off the bench giving us a spark after being sick the night before,” praised head coach Mike Harris.
That set the stage for Maugle, and he didn’t disappoint, draining three more long bombs to put Tyrone on the ropes. Tyrone made only one field goal in the second quarter compared to Jared Colmer’s four points and Mangle’s 11 as the Tigers opened up a 39-24 lead at the half.
The second half started out like the first with Tyrone getting a quick score from Josh Crabtree and then a nifty pass from Leonard Wilson to Tad Chamberlain to narrow the lead to 12.
Colmer hit a three with five minutes to go but Tyrone must have been playing rope-a-dope, because they came out with a string of points including a dazzling post-move special from Crabtree to make it 47-40 with 2:46 to go in the third.
”We had them, we wanted to cut the lead to 10 and we got it to five (49-44) but we got into foul trouble and lost our matchups.” said Harris “We played a great game against a quad-A school and didn’t quit, I’m proud of these kids,” Harris said.
The fourth quarter proved to be the knockout blow as Colmer drained a three and Maugle added three foul shots to open the lead to 13.
Corle hit his third three-pointer and Josh Clark added a deuce for Tyrone’s final points as Hollidaysburg won going away 65-49.
Tyrone will play in the consolation game against St. Maria Goretti (5-2).
