The Bellwood-Antis junior high girls basketball team made the long trip to Spring Mills after school on Monday for a game against the Penns Valley junior high. Although the Lady Blue Devils led 23-20 after three quarters, the Penns Valley girls controlled the fourth quarter to post a 34-26 win.
Ashley Lechner led the Lady Blue Devils with seven points and Amanda Ingram added six points.
“The first three quarters were probably the best three quarters we’ve played all year,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Chris Walker. “We were ahead by three going into the fourth quarter, then proceeded to play maybe our worst quarter of the year. We were outscored 14-3 in the fourth. We just got lazy on defense and allowed about four or five uncontested fastbreak layups. We weren’t getting back on defense, and when we did, we fouled. They shot 25 free throws and we shot 13. The good thing is that this was not a league game and we can still win a share of the JVL with a win at Juniata Valley on Wednesday.”
Maria Andrews led Penns Valley with a game-high 15 points.
The Juniata Valley game, which will start at 4 p.m. at Alexandria, is a make-up of the game originally scheduled for Sept. 28 that was postponed. Bellwood-Antis is 12-6 overall and 11-2 in the Juniata Valley League. The Lady Blue Devils defeated Juniata Valley at Bellwood 31-27 last Thursday, Oct. 21.
