The Altoona Sunrise Rotary Club will be holding their ninth annual Becky Sheetz Memorial Golf Tournament, on Wednesday, August 18 at Iron Masters Country Club to help support people with developmental disabilities in the Blair County area.
Proceeds from this tournament will benefit Special Olympics of Blair County and the Arc of Blair County.
Special Olympics provides training and athletic competition in a variety of sports for children and adults with disabilities. The mission of the Arc is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities through education, support and socialization.
A strong advocate for people with disabilities, Becky Sheetz played an important role in the establishment of the Becky Sheetz Recreation Center, which houses the Arc of Blair County and serves individuals with developmental disabilities.
For individuals interested in participating, the tournament registration fee is $100 per person, which includes a continental breakfast and barbecue lunch and dinner.
Golfers have a choice of teeing off at 8 a.m. or 1 p.m. Participants will have the chance to win prizes on par threes and for skill events. One of the hole-in-one prizes is a 2004 Dodge Chrysler courtesy of Thomas Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep of East Freedom. Other prizes include an overnight stay at the Carnegie House in State College, golf passes at Sunny Hanna Country Club in Westmont and $500 in cash.
According to a press release, this year’s celebrity golfers are to include Doug West and Nellie Brilles.
West is a recent Blair County Sports Hall of Fame inductee and former Altoona Area High School basketball standout. He also played at Villanova University and in the NBA.
Brilles is a former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher and is currently Vice President of Corporate Projects for the Pirates.
Also attending the event will be Arc Ambassador Bridget Scaramazzino, a self-advocate and volunteer for ACEL (Adult Center for Exceptional Learning) and Special Olympic Athletes Ben Church and Sparky Lyle.
