Martin Oil opened the first of three ballgames, Wednesday night at Vets Field, on a bright note, winning a game against Locker Room that had been suspended by darkness in the sixth inning on June 1. The rest of the long evening, that didn’t end until 11:30 p.m. wasn’t quite so special however.
After trailing Locker Room in the regularly scheduled contest, Martin Oil rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-5 lead, only to have Locker Room come back with a pair of scores of their own to wrestle a 7-6 win. Then in the final game of the night, Martin Oil scored and scored and scored, but Dick’s Pharmacy kept coming right back to match or better the tallies from Martin Oil, including three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth in an 11-7 win.
In the completion of the suspended game, Martin Oil had just scored two runs and had runners on first and third with one out at Bellwood, when the umpires determined it was getting too dark to continue.
With Ryan Kenawell at third and Dan Kovac at first, play resumed Wednesday. Martin Oil had battled back in the first portion of the game from a 7-0 deficit to finally take a 9-8 lead after five innings.
Starting pitcher Chris Alley had some problems early, not all his own making as just half of the eight runs for Locker Room were earned. Alley settled down and tossed scoreless baseball in the fifth and sixth in the first part of the game at the beginning of the month however, and when play continued at the end of the month, Kyle Drost threw a scoreless seventh to notch the win for Alley.
Martin Oil added a run to their total in the sixth. Dan Graham was hit by pitch to load the bases with one out when play started on Wednesday and Matt Albright was hit by the next toss to force in Zach Tomchick, running for Kenawell to set the final score at 12-8.
Drost got into a minor jam in the top of the seventh allowing two singles after getting the first two hitters out on ground balls. The 16-year old then got himself out of trouble with a comebacker to the mound for the final out of the game.
In the regular game, Martin Oil scored first with two unearned runs in the top of the first when Matt Plummer and Ryan McCartney reached base on consecutive errors by the Locker Room shortstop and Matt Albright singled up the middle.
Martin Oil scored again in the third when Plummer was safe on another miscue, stole second and scored on a single by Albright.
The oil crew was silent at bat for the next three innings, while Locker Room scored five times to take a 5-3 advantage.
Martin Oil finally came alive in the seventh inning to take the lead. With one out, McCartney singled for his second straight hit, but was forced at second by Albright for the second out of the frame. Derek Reimer scored all the way from second, courtesy running for Albright on Alley’s double to right. Drost singled to score Alley with the tying run and Drost moved up to second on an error by the left fielder and scored on another bad throw by the Locker Room catcher to give Martin Oil the 6-5 lead.
Aaron Harris doubled to open the Locker Room seventh, Matt Michael singled to put runners on second and third and winning pitcher Joel Reese won the game for himself with a double that scored both runners for the 7-6 triumph.
In the nightcap with Dick’s Pharmacy, Martin Oil scored single runs in the first and fifth, two in the third and three times in the fourth.
Dick’s put up two in the first, three in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and finally three more in the sixth.
Martin Oil continued a season-long trend of scoring runs and then not being able to shut the opponent down.
Jim Clancy pitched a complete-game victory for Dick’s striking out eight and walking two giving up seven runs, two earned on nine hits.
Ryan Kenawell singled with one out in the first, stole second and scored on a single by McCartney. In the third, Brisbin and Kenawell singled. McCartney drove in Brisbin with a fielder’s choice and scored later when he stole third base and scored when the catcher’s throw ended up in left field.
Alley led off the fourth with a triple and scored on an RBI grounder by Drost, who was safe on the play. On the hit and run, Zach Tomchick singled through the spot where Dick’s second baseman had been before he moved to cvover second base with pinch runner Dan Kovac running on the play. Tomchick stole second base. Both runners came home when Brisbin bounced a single up the middle.
Martin Oil added their final tally of the long night in the fifth. With two outs, Drost singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the catcher.
