Two days after mauling Corporal Miller 16-2, the Tyrone Legion had to make a late inning comeback to secure their eleventh win of the season Wednesday evening. The Legion topped Corporal Miller 12-8 thanks to their bats on a day when their usual solid pitching deserted them in the late innings.
The Tyrone Legion took an early lead in the bottom of the second when Derrick Soellner and Tyler Rickards drew back to back walks followed by a RBI single from Shane Gherrity. Ben Lynn bunted the runners into scoring position, but Corporal Miller pitcher Jeremy Vogel stopped the rally by getting a pop out and a ground out to end the threat.
Vogel drew a walk to start the third on a positive note for Corporal Miller, but Tyrone hurler Ben Gummo struck out the next three batters to end the inning.
In their half of the third, Tyrone used some two out lightning to take a 4-0 lead.
After a double play, Clint Wilson doubled, and moved to third when Soellner reached on an error. Soellner stole second, and Rickards brought both runners home with a single. Rickards stole second as well and scored on another Gherrity RBI single.
In the fourth inning two out lightning struck twice when Barry Gummo walked and scored on a Ben Gummo double, and Wilson knocked Gummo in all with two down.
Leading 6-0 heading into the top of the fifth, Ben Gummo began to tire. Corporal Miller got two walks, a hit by pitch, and RBI singles from Matt Riley, Casey Wombacher, Eben Stoehr, and Alex Sisto to cut Tyrone\’s lead to 6-5.
“Ben got tired out there, but with our schedule the way it is, we had no relief. The strike zone seemed small, big time small too,” said head coach John Gummo about the fifth inning.
Vogel retired Tyrone in order, and Corporal Miller went right back to work on offense. Pat Gaeto singled and moved to third on a throwing error. He scored on Andy Criste\’s single. The single the Criste\’s fifth hit against Tyrone in seven at bats this season. Criste tried to steal second, but Soellner made a perfect throw to make him the first out of the inning. Matt Riley tripled, and scored when Wombacher reached on an error. A Sisto double brought in Wombacher before Gummo got out of the mess with a strike out and a ground out.
A once comfortable six run lead was now a two run deficit for the Legion as they prepared to take their hacks in the bottom of the sixth, but a huge inning for Tyrone put them ahead for good.
It started with consecutive walks to Tyler Hoover and Matt Morrissey before Barry Gummo grounded into a fielder\’s choice. With runners at first and third, Ben Gummo hit a double down the line that may or may not have been foul. The runners and Gummo paused for a moment before the ball was signaled fair and Hoover came home.
Corporal Miller coaches argued the ball was foul, but the emotion seemed to fuel Tyrone.
With two men in scoring position, Wilson hit a two run single that put Tyrone ahead by a run. Soellner singled, and Rickards doubled in both runners. An error allowed Rickards to score, and after six innings Tyrone led 12-8.
“It seemed like everyone was getting on. The bottom of the line up (getting two walks to lead off the inning) came up big,” said Gummo.
Given a second chance to protect a comfortable lead, Gummo did just that on the mound sitting Corporal Miller down in order for Tyrone\’s fourth straight victory.
The Tyrone offense produced ten hits after belting fifteen against Corporal Miller two days ago.
“I hope this continues. We are putting the ball in play, and hitting with guys in scoring position,” said Gummo about his team\’s recent offensive production.
Tyrone hosts ReMax Thursday evening at 6:00 PM.
Legion Notes: Ben Gummo stayed hot in the game by hitting two doubles… He is hitting .438 over the last four games… After getting seven hits in the first game against Corporal Miller combined, Barry Gummo and Derrick Soellner combined for only one hit Wednesday…Tyrone will make up Tuesday\’s rain out against Park Furniture Friday at Tyrone.
