Martin Oil and Dick’s Pharmacy got involved in a George B. Kelley Federation baseball game on Sunday afternoon that lasted nearly three hours and had a lot of offense, errors and walks and not much pitching or defense. Before it was all done, Dick’s pulled out an 18-11 win at Bellwood.
Dick’s Pharmacy came out ready to play, scoring two runs in the top of the first and just kept rolling up the score. Martin Oil took a while to get started, then came back, but never was quite able to get to the top. The game was a sloppily-played affair with Martin Oil committing eight of the 13 errors in the game to Dick’s five miscues. Dick’s walked eight Martin Oil batters and received seven back in return.
After the Pharmacy put a pair of runs on the board in the first, Martin Oil scored twice in their half of the first to knot the score at 2-2 early.
Andy Brisbin doubled to right center and Matt Albright singled sharply to left. Dick’s committed errors on two consecutive plays to get both runners home,
With Dick’s by then ahead 12-2, Martin Oil scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to draw to within 12-6. Mark DelGrosso was safe on an error with one out and went to second on a wild pitch, while Brandon Beech was being walked. Andy Brisbin singled to load the bases with one out. Chris Alley lifted a sacrifice fly to score DelGrosso and was safe at first when the ball was dropped. Beech scored an error, Chris Alley came home on the third miscue of the inning, and Brisbin scored on an RBI groundout by Ryan Kenawell.
Martin Oil scored three times in the fifth inning. DelGrosso singled and scored on a wild pitch, Chris McDaniel walked and came home on a passed ball that got by the catcher and Alley was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a single by Kenawell.
With just one last chance, the hosts scored twice in the bottom half of the seventh, but couldn’t get any closer than 18-11, to drop their record to 5-5. Dick’s Pharmacy improves to 6-8 with the victory.
Alley singled and Albright, who led Martin Oil with three hits, doubled to put runners in scoring position at second and third. Kenawell drove in his third RBI of the game, scoring Brisbin with a ground out and Albright scored on a wild pitch. Kyle Drost singled to keep Martin Oil hopes alive, but Tyler Norris, who pitched the last three innings to notch a save, fanned Derek Reimer and Dan Graham to end the game.
Josh Mulhollem pitched the first four innings for Dick’s to pick up the win, allowing eight runs, two earned, on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Norris allowed three runs, all earned, on four hits, walking three and striking out four.
Norris, with four hits, including a double and two RBI, Mulhollem, who cracked a home run, and designated hitter Robbie Johnson with a pair of singles and four RBI led Dick’s offense.
In addition to Albright’s three hits for martin Oil, Brisbin and DelGrosso each had two.
Dustin Harris started for Martin Oil, giving up eight runs, just two earned on four hits, walking four and striking out four in three innings on the mound. Dan Graham pitched the fourth and fifth, allowing eight runs, five earned on eight hits with four Ks and three walks and Brisbin finished up pitching two innings, allowing two runs, both unearned, on one hit with no walks or strikeouts.
Martin Oil hosts first-place ReMax Realty (10-2) today at 6 p.m. at Bellwood.
