Tyrone Area School District student James Brokenshire is the local recipient of the Burger King scholarship award.
For the fifth year in a row, the Burger King Scholars Program has awarded deserving students scholarships towards college or post-secondary vocational/technical school.
Ninety high school seniors from Pennsylvania will each receive the award based on grade point average, demonstrated financial need, work experience and continual participation in extracurricular activities.
“The Burger King system understands the importance and dedication required to uplift and support our young people,” said Steven M. Lewis, co-chairman of the Burger King/McLamore Foundation, which administers the Burger King Scholars Program.
“The Burger King Scholars Program, through our relationship with our restaurants and community members, gives us the opportunity to thoroughly enrich the lives of these students by offering them the long-lasting gift of an advanced education.”
Scholarship funds come directly from franchise and company-owned Burger King restaurants throughout the country. Each individual restaurant coordinates and organizes its fund-raising activities in order to generate the funds that are awarded to the students of a restaurant’s respective community.
Common methods include the annual French fry fundraiser, canister collections and newspaper sales, among other fundraising activities. To determine scholarship recipients, the Burger King/McLamore Foundation works with high school principals and counselors to identify students who meet the criteria for an award.
“We at Burger King Corporation are really proud to support the education of the next generation,” said Clyde W. Rucker, co-chairman of the Burger King/McLamore Foundation.
“Many of these smart, well-rounded kids have high potential and would not have the opportunity to attend college or other vocational schools without our help.”
The Burger King/McLamore Foundation was established in late 1997 with the primary mission of providing educational opportunities to deserving youth in the spirit of Burger King Corporation co-founder, the late James W. McLamore. As a collaborative effort among McLamore family members, North American franchises, system vendors, and Burger King Corporation, the Foundation seeks to give back to the local communities in which Burger King restaurants do business.
