Three days after drawing only one walk in a 5-4 extra inning victory over Sheetz, the Tyrone Legion took 18 coupled with two hit by pitches and five hits to run the score up on Hoss\’s 10-0. The offensive walking machine was more than enough for starter Barry Gummo who went the distance for his second win in as many games.
Gummo had all his pitches working and never allowed a runner past second base while striking out 12 and allowing only two hits.
“He did a great job mixing it up and got the strike outs. He worked ahead all day, and that leads to good pitching,” said head coach for the day Tom Rumberger.
Before Gummo even took the mound, his offense had four runs on the score board with the help of some wildness from the Hoss\’s pitchers. Gummo walked to lead off the game, and stole second before Ben Gummo walked as well. Barry got caught up between second and third attempting to steal and was picked off for the first out. Brinton Mingle and Clint Wilson drew walks to load the bases, and Derrick Soellner brought in two with a double off the center field wall. Brandon Maceno brought in Tyrone\’s third run with an RBI single, and stole second before Tyler Rickards drew his first of three walks to reload the bases. Hoss\’s made a move to the bullpen, and reliever Nathaniel Barroner got Jason Wilson to ground out. The grounder scored Soellner to make the score 4-0, and Barroner kept it that way by getting Jeremy Myers to ground out and end the inning.
The Tyrone defense wasn\’t on the field long as Gummo struck out the side in the bottom of the inning, but another base running miscue ran the Legion out of a scoring opportunity in the second inning sending Gummo back to the mound.
Ben Royer led off with a double to deep center for Hoss\’s, but he would not get any farther. After walking Brandon Marasco, Gummo picked him off first base. He then finished the inning by striking out Ryan Conway and getting a ground out.
Tyrone missed scoring opportunities the next three innings in which they left seven people on base and were caught stealing twice.
“We made some dumb base running errors. You just simply have to wait until the pitcher is going home to take off,” said Rumberger on the missed opportunities.
Meanwhile Gummo was continuing his dominance on the mound striking out three and allowing only one hit over the three innings, preserving Tyrone\’s four run lead.
After Barroner got a strike out to start the top of the sixth, Tyrone finally broke the game open. Clint Wilson, Soellner and Maceno drew walks to load the bases, and after a strike out, Jason Wilson drew the fourth walk of the inning to force in a run.
Pinch hitter Jared Rodgers appeared to be struck in the back by a Barroner fast ball four pitches later, but the home plate umpire ruled the ball hit off Rodger\’s bat and called the pitch a foul ball. Rumberger contested that the ball had hit Rodgers and after a lengthy argument was ejected. When play resumed, Rodgers took the next two pitches he saw and worked a walk to bring in the second run of the inning. Barry Gummo added two more with a two run single to center field. Gummo walked off first as Ben Gummo walked to the plate, drawing Barroner\’s attention. Meanwhile, Rodgers took off for home and stole a run for the Legion before Gummo was tagged out to end the inning.
Tyrone added a tenth run in the top of the seventh on an error and a single, and Gummo struck out five of the last six batters he faced to close out the game for the Legion.
The Legion did not commit an error after having five miscues in their first game.
“Error free baseball comes with good pitching. When you have a guy on the mound pitching like Barry did today, the players are ready and make the plays,” said Rumberger about the defensive performance.
The Tyrone Legion\’s next action will come Sunday with a doubleheader against Dick\’s Pharmacy 2:00 PM at Vet\’s field and ReMax Realty 5:00 PM at Mansion Park.
