The Tyrone girls softball team scored early and often to out away the Huntingdon Lady Bearcats 10-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Huntingdon.
Meghan McAllister got the Tyrone girls off and rolling with a second-inning single that drove in the first run of the game and although the Lady Eagles scored nine more times, winning pitcher Hilary McNelis made sure that was all the Orange and Black would need. McNelis tossed her fourth shutout of the season for the Lady Eagles who improved their record to 5-4. The junior hurler allowed just two hits, striking out seven and walking one.
McAllister had quite a day at the plate, going three-for-three with one run scored and two RBIs to lead the Lady Eagles. McNelis continued her heavy hitting by crashing two doubles and accounting for four RBIs in addition to a terrific job on the mound. Katie Whitby, Ashley Ripka and Stefani Bryan also each added one RBI.
“Meghan McAllister really got us started with the first run batted in foe us in the second inning,” reported Tyrone softball coach Lois Loncher. “The way Hilary McNelis has been pitching, one run is a big plus, that is usually about all we need with her pitching. Today was a big win for the girls after a disappointing loss to Mount Union on Monday. Basically we were really clicking today. We hit well the entire game, played errorless defense and got a good pitching performance from Hilary.
“We need to stay focused going into our game on Friday Hollidaysburg and the tournament at Southern Huntingdon on Saturday. I think we often have better teams than Southern Huntingdon, but for some reason, they always give us a tough time.”
The Tyrone softball squad plays Hollidaysburg at home at the Harry Sickler Athletic Complex on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and participates in the annual Southern Huntingdon Softball Tournament beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
