Bellwood-Antis took their first lead of the season against the Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders on Monday afternoon, but couldn’t hold on to it, eventually dropping a 7-4 decision to Bishop Guilfoyle.
A bright spot for the Lady Blue Devils was an early 2-0 lead and the fact the young inexperienced B-A squad was able to compete on a level table with the Lady Marauders.
Bishop Guilfoyle scored all their runs early. After Bellwood-Antis put two runs on the scoreboard in the top half of the first, BG came back with one in the first, three in the second and three more in the third to wrap up the victory.
Lindsey Connor led the Lady Marauders with a pair of singles, a double and two runs batted in. Anna Shrift added a doubled and Theresa and Brittany Sweeney each drove in two runs for BG, who improved to 2-4. The Sweeney sisters divided up the pitching chores for the Lady Marauders with Theresa starting and picking up the win. Theresa Sweeney struck out two and walked three and Brittany Sweeney fanned three and walked four.
Heather Detwiler pitched the complete-game for the Lady Blue Devils striking out three and walking five.
“Heather Detwiler pitched well enough to get a win today,” explained Bellwood-Antis head coach Alex Sitman. “The girls just didn’t bring the bats today. We had runners on, but couldn’t get them home. We had some poor pitch selection at the plate. A number of times, we got caught looking and that shouldn’t have happened against the caliber of pitching we saw out there. We also had some sloppy base running. At one time, we had runners on second and third with no outs and didn’t score. I don’t think there is much difference between our team and BG. Today, they just seemed to want the win more than we did. We need to keep our intensity up for seven innings and find a way to get those base runners home.”
Bellwood-Antis took a 2-0 lead in the first when Becka Forney singled, stole second base and moved to third on a passed ball. Heather Detwiler walked and Kerstin Myers scored Forney with a fielder’s choice and after Detwiler stole third base, Charlie Burns scored her with another fielder’s choice.
In the third frame, Detwiler walked again, stole second and scored on a line single by Burns. The final Lady Blue Devil tally came an inning later. Kasey Narehood singled to open the fourth inning, then stole second base. Laura Cresswell drew a base on balls and Danielle Riley moved Narehood to third base with a fielder’s choice. Pam Weyant banged a single to plat Narehood with the final B-A run.
