During the Tyrone Area YMCA’s annual fund drive, stories and photos from the Y’s past will appear periodically in The Daily Herald.
The YMCA girl’s basketball team from the early 1930s was a championship squad.
The inscription on the ball reads “City League Champs.”
The players are pictured, first row, from left: Mit (Umholtz) Eyer, Ruth (Pannebaker) Budd and Josephine Romano. Second row: Gertrude (Ammerman) Shaner, Ruth (Little) Reinschmidt, Betty Sullivan and Phil (Lynn) Charles. The man in the photo is not identified.
The girls wore the uniforms of the Presbyterian Boy’s team from the church league, which accounts for the “P” on the uniforms.
The late Elizabeth Sullivan provided the photo as well as the players’ names to the YMCA.
Then, as now, basketball was an important part of the activities of the Tyrone YMCA.
During the annual fund drive, community members are asked to respond generously when contacted by a campaign volunteer.
