Claysburg-Kimmel proved to be a rude host to the Bellwood-Antis boys basketball team on Friday night, outscoring the Blue Devils in each quarter to post a 54-29 win at their home court. The Blue Devils leading scorer, Shawn Weiand was at home battling the flu and Bellwood-Antis played like they really missed him.
The Bulldogs used a 17-4 first-quarter advantge as a springboard and then carried slight margins ineach of the final three quarters as well.
Following a seven-point run by Claysburg to begin the contest, Tyler McClellan stepped up to fire in a trey that cut the score to 7-3 with 4:06 left in the first quarter. The Blue Devils only other score of the quarter was a Chris Edmiston foul shot.
Mark DelGrosso, who scored seven points for B-A opened the second quarter with two free throws and Matt Plummer added one of two. Before DelGrosso notched a three-pointer however, Claysburg had extended the lead to 22-10. Paul Greiner banked in a short jumper and Matt Plummer added one of two foul shots, but the Bulldogs countered with the last four points of the half to take a 13-10 advantage in the quarter and 30-14 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Bellwood-Antis was able to manage just seven points, while Claysburg-Kimmel doubled that total to score 14 and give themselves a 44-21 margin with eight minutes to play.
Mark DelGrosso ht a two to stop one Claysburg run and nailed another trey on his next trip downcourt. Tyler McClellan put in a short left-handed hook for the final score of the quarter.
The fourth quarter was the closest, but the Bulldogs still managed to get a two-point advantage 10-8 to close out the game 54-29 to win their third game in 13 starts, while the Blue Devils fall to 4-12.
Greiner grabbed a rebound and put back the shot for the first bucket of the fourth quarter and later added a basket off a drive, in which he was fouled but injured. He was alright, but had to leave the game for a short break. L.J. Seidel came in off the bench and sunk the foul shot to complete a strange three-point play by two people. Greiner returned to add two more foul shots near the end of the game and was the high man for the Blue Devils with eight points.
“Claysburg did a good job in their zone,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Tim Keech. “I told the kids at halftime I honestly though we got some really good looks against that zone, but the ball just didn’t go in. I think that’s a good indication of how much Shawn Weiand means to this team. He had a great practice and I thought ‘boy he could really be ready to go. I knew Claysburg would play zone and I thought it would be a good night for him. Then at the pregame meal they told me he wasn’t in school. I hope it’s something that will be quickly gone, because we turn around and play three games again next week.
I think number one, how much he means for the team and number two, I think sometimes some of these guys stand around and watch him, instead of moving around and contributing to the team. They stand around and let hiom carry everything, when they could be doing a better effort to helping the team. When he’s not here they’re still not moving and there is no one to carry the load. no one tonight showed me they were ready to step up and do anything.”
Bellwood-Antis was nine for 45 from the field and eight for 18 from the foul line
Junior Varsity
Bellwood-Antis led for most of the game in tgurning back the Claysburg-Kimmel junior varsity 38-36.
Tyler McClellan who scored 12 points in the preliminary game, sank a pair of free throws 10 seconds to play to nail down the win which improved the B-A junior varsity record to 3-10.
B-A junior Aaron Bell lead all scorers with 13 points.
Peter Dehoff fronted Claysburg-Kimmel with 10 points and Michael Sybert and Kyle Nale each added nine points.
