The Tyrone Golden Eagles had hoped a win Friday night over Philipsburg-Osceola would serve as a kick start to the second cycle of the Mountain League. Their hopes went unfounded as Tyrone dropped a 57-49 decision to the Warriors.
The Golden Eagles, who defeated IV to open the Mountain League first cycle at home, had a tougher go of it last night. Zach Miller was hot from behind the arc by hitting clutch three pointers when Tyrone would make a challenge.
After the first quarter, Tyrone trailed by only three points 16-13, but a 14-8 second quarter advantage gave Indian Valley a nine point lead at the half.
At times in the third quarter, Indian Valley would go up by 10 points or more, but Tyrone would not give up and cut the lead to seven at the end of three.
Indian Valley outscored Tyrone 17-12 in the fourth quarter to pull away to a 59-47 victory.
“We had some phases of the game where we lacked execution,” said Tyrone coach Mike Harris. “We missed some screens and to win on the road, you have to execute. Our kids played hard and played physical, but we came up just a little short.”
Tyrone drops to 5-8 on the season and Indian Valley improves to 7-8.
The Golden Eagles travel to Huntingdon on Friday to take on the Bearcats.
“It’s never easy to play at Huntingdon,” said Harris. “You have to fire on all cylinders to beat the good teams in this league and this season there are no bad teams in the Mountain League. When we played Huntingdon last Monday, we committed 23 turnovers. We are beating ourselves more than we are being beaten. If we execute like we can, we have the chance to play well.”
The Golden Eagles were led by Leonard Wilson who had 14 points. The Tyrone sophomore went 12-12 from the charity stripe. Josh Crabtree chipped in with 12.
“We went 19-23 from the line last night and that is a positive,” said Harris. “Foul shooting night in and night out has been inconsistent for our guys and hopefully, we have turned the corner.”
