Bellwood-Antis opened the 1942 season with a game Bigler Township on Sept. 12, 1942. With World War II raging, B-A head coach Bob Killen, faculty manager Charles Hetrick and assistant football coach and head basketball coach Lew Myers all were lost to the school while serving in the armed forces.
New head coach Lemont “Duke” Burkholder began his tenure at Bellwood-Antis with a 25-7 victory over Bigler. Burkholder would coach at Bellwood from 1942 through the 1948 season and compiled an overall 55-13-2 mark before going on to coach and teach at Dubois High School. After a 5-5 mark in 1942, Burkholder went 50-8-2 from 1943 to 1948.
The Blue Devils blocked two Township punts and both led to touchdowns as Bellwood-Antis triumphed over the team Bigler Township, from Madera.
Bellwood-Antis marched to the Bigler-17, but lost the ball on a fumble. The Blue Devils held and forced a punt, which the B-A defense blocked. Mike Rodgers raced around end for the first score.
In the second quarter, Bigler fumbled and the Blue Devils recovered. Joe Garman swept around end on the first play for the six-pointer and then added the PAT kick.
Midway through the third period, after Bellwood-Antis converted three successive first downs, Steve Hatfield, one of the best all-around athletes ever from Bellwood, rambled for another score. Later in that same period, the Blue Devil defense blocked their second punt and recovered at the Bigler-30.
Dale Wolfkill finished off the scoring for Bellwood-Antis by scooting in for the touchdown. Bigler added their only score in the fourth quarter to set the final score
A crowd of nearly 4,000 witnessed the Blue Devils game against Tyrone at Gray Field on Sept. 12, 1952. Bellwood-Antis won for the 27th consecutive without a loss, turning the Eagles away 19-0.
In an eight o’clock start, the Blue Devils jumped on a Tyrone fumble on the second play of the game to get things started. Five plays later, sophomore fullback Albert “Chub” Dillen slipped in from the one to give the B-A “Main Line Express” a jump start. Dillen also had a 15-yard gain during the series.
Still in the opening quarter, Don Clark recovered a Tyrone fumble at the Eagles-20. Three plays later, Dillen hooked up with senior end Dean Campbell with a jump pass for eight yards and the Blue Devils’ second TD. Clark circled right end for the PAT and a 13-0 advantage.
Tyrone mounted one serious scoring threat in the first half, marching to the BA-10 before again coughing up the football on another fumble.
In the third quarter, Jim Fetterman intercepted a Tyrone pass at the Eagles-25. Clark fired a jump pass to Campbell that took the ball to the T-2. From there, Dillen bucked over the right side for his second TD of the night.
Tyrone drove to the B-A 25 late in the fourth quarter, but lost the ball on downs.
Bellwood-Antis scored a pair of late TDs on Sept. 12, 1997 to pull away from Bishop Guilfoyle 20-7.
The Marauders scored in the first quarter and the Blue Devils tied the score in the second for a 7-7 draw at the half.
Jeremy Guyer, who led all rushers with 173 yards on 31 carries, had his number called three times for 41 yards to lead a second-quarter drive and B-A quarterback Matt Miller found tight end Zack Fay behind the Marauder defenders for a 23-yard TD pass. Tim Noonan’s PAT tied the score.
Junior cornerback Tim Tyler had a hand in setting up both fourth-quarter scores for the Blue Devils.
With the game-clock beginning to run down, Bishop Guilfoyle began to take to the air to try and get the lead. Tyler stepped in front of a Marauder pass attempt and returned the pick 31 yards to the BG-15. Guyer had his number called all four times, including the two-yard TD for a 13-7 advantage.
Minutes later, it was Tyler to the rescue again, intercepting a pass at midfield and returning it to the BG-14. Guyer sealed the win with a nine-yard TD rush and Noona’s PAT kick made it 20-7.
Bellwood-Antis under coach John Hayes was 10-3 in 1997, winning the District VI-AA title and losing to eventual state champ Sharpsville in the last minute of the PIAA W estern Semifinal
