The Tyrone junior varsity football traveled to Philipsburg on Monday to play Philipsburg-Osceola.
The Mountie Jayvees spotted the Tyrone junior varsity the early lead before coming back to take a solid 29-8 victory.
Tyrone, with a host of young inexperienced players, dominated the first quarter, receiving the opening kickoff and marching down the field for a score. Getting three and four yards at a clip, the Little Eagles took all but one second of the first quarter in a time-consiming drive with Shane Christine scoring the three-yard TD and Loy Bonsell adding the two-point conversion on a run.
The Tyrone defense held P-O and forced a punt and started to again methodically move the ball down the field again.
Then, the wheel fell off. Tyrone lost a fumble at the Mountie-32. Philipsburg recovered and quickly scored twice to carry a 14-8 advantage into the halftime intermission.
P-O scored on a fourth and goal at the Tyrone 12-yard line late in the third quarter on a fade pass to go up 22-8 and added the final score against the Tyrone reserves in the fourth quarter with just six seconds to play.
“We came out looking sharp and mentally focused,” said Tyrone coach Chuck Banas. “Then we started making simple errors, missed tackles and not making our blocks. It was like a balloon being deflated. All at once we reverted to not doing anything right everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. We had a meeting after practice yesterday about what they wanted for this team. They decided to key on being mentally focused and get into a sound frame of mind to be able to play sound football. We are going to take it one Monday at a time and try mature and learn where to go and get ready in preparation for the varsity.”
