On a sunny and 75 degree afternoon, the Tyrone boys and girls cross country teams were swept by Penns Valley by the score of 15-50.
On the girls side, the Lady Rams swept the first five positions to score the easy victory. Cassie Neibel led the way by covering the 3.1 mile course in 24:21. Anna Cobb took second in 24:50, Kendra Foor was third at 25:00, Cammie Brown was fourth at 25:43 and Brittney Brooks wrapped up the top five sweep for Penns Valley with a 25:53.
Rebecca Mogle was the highest finishing Lady Eagle by placing sixth in 26:10. Emily Ingle and Erin Langenbacher battled neck and neck until the end with Ingle edging Langenbacher by four seconds. Adeena Harbst and Amber Davis rounded out the five Lady Eagle runners.
“Our girls ran hard,” said Tyrone cross country coach Tammy Snyder. “Penns Valley is always a contender for the conference title and is very strong again this year. I am pleased with how our girls ran and we are seeing improvement in every meet.”
In the boys meet, Penns Valley took seven of the top eight positions with the only dent in the dominance coming from Bald Eagle Area’s Preston Bittinger who took second.
Judson Brooker claimed the victory for the Rams with a time of 18:31. Penns Valley took home positions 3-7 with Josh Stover (19:08), Matt Brown (19:53), Vince Nicsea (19:56), Billy Ford (20:27), Adam Jepson (20:32) and Tim Conroy (20:39) wrapping up the top eight.
Tyrone’s Nathan Barber and Jim Gerhet were the only top-10 finishers for the Golden Eagles. Barber finished ninth at 22:00 and Gerhet took home 10th with a time of 22:13.
Eric Sweet took home 11th at 22:22, Dane McCloskey was 13th at 22:51 and Chris Bradigan was Tyrone’s fifth finisher coming home 14th at 23:15.
“Penns Valley has a very strong team and will be favored to win the conference,” said Snyder. “Out guys showed a lot of improvement and I am very encouraged that our top-five finished within a minute-fifteen of each other. Our course is very tough and has a lot of hills. When we hit the District VI meet on a flat course, all this hill running will pay off.”
Other Tyrone finishers were Sam McCloskey (27:20), Nick Barndt (29:12), Joey Miller (31:25) and John Wiser (37:10).
