The Tyrone junior high girls basketball team played their second straight road game of the early 2003 season on Thursday at Bald Eagle Area. The ninth graders (0-2) had an early lead, but dropped their second contest of the season 41-28.
Elizabeth Tepsic fronted the Lady Eagles with 14 points and six rebounds and Kayla Corle added nine points.
The Ninth graders were leading 18-9, when Brooke Garbinsky drew her third foul and had to sit out the rest of the half. BEA regrouped to tie the score 22-22 at half-time, then came out for the second half using a press.
While the Tyrone girls were able to figure the press out, it took away any momentum the Lady Eagles may have had, resulting in BEA outscoring Tyrone in the second half 19-6 for the win.
“We went away from our offensive gameplan in the second half,” said Tyrone coach Kerry Naylor. “We were up and playing well when Brooke got her third foul. That hurt our game. Then in the second half, their press didn’t bother us much, but it took us too long to figure out how to handle it. We did OK after we recovered. We have too many good players not to have a good season.”
The seventh and eighth grade team evened their record at 1-1 with a 20-17 win.
Cassie Faratta scored 12 points and played really well according to coach Naylor. Sarah Halter and Lindsey Christine pulled down 10 rebounds for the Lady Eagles, who trailed 17-8 before scoring the final 12 points to record the win.
“This game was just the reverse of the ninth grade ballgame,” said coach Naylor. “The girls got behind, but came back to get the win. This was a good learning experience for them. Cassie is just a first-year player, who did a real nice job for us today.”
