State College has been a premier tennis power in the area for years. The end of the Center Counties High School Tennis league and the birth of the new Mountain Athletic super conference hasn’t changed much along those lines.
On Monday afternoon, the Tyrone girls tennis team traveled into the lair of the beast, with the State College Lady Lions winning all but one of seven matches for a strong 6-1 win.
The Lady Eagles number one doubles team of Hilary McNelis and Missy Stager defeated their adversaries 8-3 in a proset to prevent a shutout. State College showed their strength by losing just one set in the other five singles matches and one doubles match. The Stager/McNelis doubles team continued their winning ways, however and are looking very good for the matches ahead.
“I always enjoy the trip home to my high school courts,” said Tyrone coach and State College grad Charles Fitzgerald, “but I know that we will be seeing some good tennis players. We did. All the kids played very well and held their own. Hilary and Missy are an excellent doubles team and a pleasure to watch.”
Next up for the Lady Eagles is a home match against Central Mountain on Wednesday. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
