Senior Bellwood-Antis quarterback Shawn Weiand set a new school record for passing yardage in the Blue Devils’ 41-0 rout of Mercyhurst Prep on Saturday night.
Weiand completed 10-of-12 pass attempts for 249 yards against the Lakers, including touchdown passes of 85 yards to tight end Matt Plummer and 20 yards to Derrick Hoffer.
The old mark of 230 yards was set by Scott Hunter in 1975 against Claysburg-Kimmel. Hunter also set the school record for touchdowns in that game with five, throwing all five in the first half.
Weiand, a catcher on the state championship Bellwood-Antis baseball team, quarterbacked the junior high team in 2000, but has concentrated on baseball and basketball the last two years and hasn’t played football since ninth grade.
“Shawn had a great game tonight,” said B-A head coach John Hayes. “He is a good athlete, who is slowly working his way back after not participating for two years. He and backup Zach Tomchick have a special situation. There was a real battle for the starting position, but they have handled it better than most professionals. Now they help each other, complement each other. It will help us a lot down the road.”
Bellwood-Antis hosts Everett Friday evening.
