Bellwood-Antis and Tyrone opened the 2003 girls volleyball on tuesday evening by matching off against each other. The Lady Blue Devils defeated their Northern Blair County rivals three games to one. The Lady Eagles struck first taking the opening match 26-24, but Bellwood-Antis fought back to take three games in a row and secure the match. The Lady Blue Devils won 25-22, 25-17 and 25-13.
Lauren Carter paced the Bellwood-Antis women with 14 kills, six blocks and 12 service points. Teammate Stephanie Hatch added 11 kills, six blocks and eight points. Lindsey Dearing had 40 assists.
Katie Whitby led Tyrone with 13 service points, including six aces. jen Harper added five kills and Ashley Roth had eight blocks.
“Bellwood’s heighth in the middle gave us problems all night,” said Tyrone coach Dave Eckberg. “We passed the ball fairly well, but we couldn’t take advantage and put the ball on the floor. We made too made hitting and service errors and when you don’t have a “go to” hitter, those mistakes make the difference in the outcome of the match”
